Alcohol is the drug most frequentlyused by high school seniors and its use isincreasing. Boys usually try alcohol for thefirst time when 11 years old, while the averageage for girls’ first drink is 13. Underagedrinking is a factor in nearly half of allteen automobile crashes and contributes toyouth suicides, homicides and fatal injuries.Additionally, alcohol abuse is linked to asmany as two-thirds of all sexual assaults anddate rapes of teens and college students. It is amajor factor in unprotected sex among youth,increasing their risk of contracting HIV orother sexually transmitted diseases.The issue of underage drinking is a complexproblem and can only be solved through asustained and cooperative effort betweenparents, schools, community leaders andyouth themselves. There are three areas whichhave proven to be effective in prevention ofunderage drinking: curtailing the availabilityof alcohol, consistent enforcement of existinglaws and regulations and changing culturalmisconceptions and behaviors througheducation.Be part of the solution.
