Helen F. Giles-Gee, PhDTwenty-Second President<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>Dr. Helen F. Giles-Gee was selected as <strong>the</strong> 22ndpresident <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 192-year history <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>Sciences</strong> and began her tenure on July 16, 2012.A well-respected and nationally known scholar,hav<strong>in</strong>g published articles, book chapters, andnational reports on economic revitalization, facultyworkload, academic plann<strong>in</strong>g, global education,m<strong>in</strong>ority retention, and more, she br<strong>in</strong>gs more than30 years <strong>of</strong> experience <strong>in</strong> higher education. Dr.Giles-Gee has a documented history <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>gwith faculty, staff, adm<strong>in</strong>istrators, and campuscommunities to implement strategies that propel<strong>in</strong>stitutions to higher levels.S<strong>in</strong>ce her arrival at U<strong>Sciences</strong>, Dr. Giles-Gee has already begun to make animpact. She has taken strides to make <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> more efficient through<strong>in</strong>ternal realignments and assessments generat<strong>in</strong>g millions <strong>of</strong> dollars tore<strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> campus priorities, worked to fur<strong>the</strong>r development <strong>of</strong> articulationagreements with o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stitutions, <strong>in</strong>creased activities with <strong>the</strong> community,and is re<strong>in</strong>vigorat<strong>in</strong>g plann<strong>in</strong>g for strategic <strong>in</strong>itiatives. In February, she helped torealize <strong>the</strong> plans for <strong>the</strong> new Science and Technology Center II with a ceremonialgroundbreak<strong>in</strong>g. Look<strong>in</strong>g ahead, she will add a new provost to <strong>the</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>in</strong>July and a vice president for f<strong>in</strong>ance and adm<strong>in</strong>istration with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same time frame.Dr. Giles-Gee served as president <strong>of</strong> Keene State College <strong>in</strong> New Hampshirefrom 2005 through 2012. Dur<strong>in</strong>g that time, she led Keene State through a major<strong>in</strong>stitutional transformation, direct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> development and implementation <strong>of</strong> astrategic plan that reached or surpassed benchmarks for academic excellence <strong>in</strong>its first five years.Prior to her arrival at Keene, Dr. Giles-Gee was provost at Rowan <strong>University</strong>, dean<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies at SUNY Cortland, associate vice chancellorfor academic affairs and director <strong>of</strong> articulation at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> System <strong>of</strong>Maryland, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> biology and executive assistant to <strong>the</strong> president at TowsonState <strong>University</strong>, and chair <strong>of</strong> biology at Cheyney <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania.
