TAILOR-MADETRAININGUNESCO-IHE tailor-made training is designedfor clients whose staff require tuitionon specific topics or seek to develop a commonknowledge base to address challengesahead. The focus of the courses can be technical, managerial, strategic or operational, depending on the client’s priorities.12
Tailor-made training caters directly to clientneeds. This means they can be organized forgroups of various sizes, from one or multipleorganizations, sectors or regions. They can bedesigned to upgrade knowledge and skills, introducingnew technologies, or strengthen sectorperformance, to name but a few options. Thetrainings can vary in length and depth, rangingfrom a course lasting several days, to a tailoredMSc programme in which regular componentsare mixed with case studies and modules requestedby the client.Tailor-made training can be delivered on-siteor using UNESCO-IHE in Delft as a base, or acombination of the two. A mixture of traininginstruments are utilised in creating tailor-madetrainings, including lectures, workshops, groupwork, presentations, role-plays, case studies andstudy tours to project sites throughout Europe orthe region where the training takes place.A few examples of tailor-made training are presentedhere. Since NBI-WRPMPwas actively engaged in thedevelopment of a Nile BasinDecision Support System(DSS) envisaged as a commonand shared tool for waterresources planning and management, they requested thatthis tailor-made programmecovered the area of DSSdevelopment for River BasinManagement. UNESCO-IHEoffered an adaptation of itsHydroinformatics specialization, which covered manyrelevant aspects, such as modellingand data integration, aswell as software engineeringand information management.Additional tailor-made subjectstaught were directly relatedto DSS development, suchas decision making theory, systemanalysis and decision support, and software integrationtechnologies. MSc researchwas carried out on Nile Basincase studies - always relatedto modelling and decisionsupport applications. Eighteenparticipants from Nile basincountries attended this tailormadeprogramme over thetwo years it was given. As theNile Basin DSS developmentalso progressed during thisperiod - aspects of this realworldproject were incorporatedin the programme. Thegraduates developed a commonunderstanding of DSSrelatedtopics and can promotethe local adoption and uptakeof the Nile basin DSS andrelated tools in the region.Multiple Trainingsfor K-WaterK-Water, the Korea WaterResources Corporation has along standing tradition of professionallyeducating its staffat UNESCO-IHE. Deliveredtailor-made trainings include‘Dissolved Air Flotation andWater Purification,’ ‘WaterSupply and MembraneTechnology,’ ‘Designand Modelling of WaterTransport and Distribution,’and ‘Wastewater TreatmentProcess Design andModelling’. Courses combineregular modules of UNESCO-IHE Master Programmeon Municipal Water andInfrastructure with tailoredcomponents consisting ofexposure to Dutch and EUpractice in the field, laboratorysessions, design and modellingworkshops and presentationof state-of-the-art toolsfor optimisation of the designand operation of systems.Cleaner ProductionTechnologies in EcuadorIn Ecuador, UNESCO-IHEconducted a series of workshopsfor staff of industries, tostimulate the incorporation ofcleaner production technologiesat their workplace. Thesetup of each of these tailormadetrainings was similar:after participants wereintroduced to the generalconcepts of cleaner productionand analysis thereof, theywere guided in the process ofwriting a 'research proposal'.They returned to their workplaceto collect informationand data relevant to theirresearch question. Guided bythe Institute’s staff, they cameup with concrete proposalsfor improving their company’senvironmental standing.Later on, best practiceswere exchanged and furtherimproved. Some of the resultscould be applied immediatelyto the work floor.(Waste)water SectorTraining for DecisionMakers from IranThe water and wastewatersector in Iran is facing amultitude of problems.
