This letter was originally mailed at Rahway, NJ to Montgomery, AL. At first, ared '5' was placed on the cover as the rate, but since it was over 500 miles, itwas changed to '10' under the regulation effective July 1, 1845. Sarah had apparentlymoved to St. Augustine, FL and so the letter was readdressed, '10' addeddue to the forwarding, and the letter sent on collect '20'.1;7,Ir,\This letter originated in New Brunswick, NJ on Nov. 10, 1848. Addressed toGeorge Sykes, Burlington County, Wrightstwon, NJ, it was sent by the mail clerkto Burlington where it arrived Nov. 11th (the month is inverted). The mail clerkapparently did not notice that the address was Burlington County, not Burlington(city). Even though the clerk made the error, George Sykes was charged an extra'5' for forwarding.-William C. Coles Jr.-NJPH 25Summer 1979
