Photos by <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>House</strong>.“I learnt different ways toact and respond to differentpeople and situations, and howfocussed and professional youhave to be at work.”Student, Simone Armstrong, Year 10“Being here this weekwas an amazing experienceand a great opportunity...”Student, Amy Johnson, Year 9work experience:case study 2<strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>House</strong> piloted an IndigenousWork Experience Program in partnershipwith the Aboriginal Education Unit of theDepartment of Education and Training.Twelve Indigenous high school studentsinterested in pursuing careers in the arts,from a range of schools in the <strong>Sydney</strong> regiontook part in the Program.Over the week the students took part ina vocational learning program designedto expose them to a variety of roles anddepartments across <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>House</strong>.These included Stage Managers, Sound/AVand Lighting Technicians, Front Of <strong>House</strong>,Customer Service and Box Office, Producers,Designers and Marketers, Commercial andTourism staff and Production staff andperformers from Bangarra Dance Theatre.The students also attended rehearsals andperformances by <strong>Sydney</strong> Symphony, <strong>Opera</strong>Australia and Babies Proms and finishedtheir week with afternoon tea in the CEO’soffice where they shared and evaluated theirexperiences.This program established a solid workingrelationship between <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>House</strong>and the Department of Education andTraining’s Aboriginal Education Unit andit is hoped that collaboration on futureprojects will continue. A database ofIndigenous students who are interested infuture opportunities at the <strong>House</strong> has sincebeen created and <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>House</strong> isnow developing methods and protocolsfor working with young people on workexperience programs. One of the students,Simone Armstrong, has been selected as amember of the <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>House</strong> YouthAdvisory Committee.The Indigenous Work Experience Programwill continue as a full five day program in<strong>2012</strong>/<strong>13</strong>.Piloted in 2011, <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>House</strong>’s Indigenous WorkExperience Program is an interactive vocational learningprogram that gave twelve students the opportunity to workfor a week at an international performing arts centre.7 8[image] <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>House</strong> staff and students.
