Standardisation ProcessStefan Winter, RESTINA, presented on <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> relevance and <strong>the</strong> current progress in <strong>the</strong>standardisation <strong>of</strong> technologies that impact <strong>the</strong> task force. There has been a requestthat an IETF informational document be created on “The eduroam architecture for WiFiroaming” which will summarise <strong>the</strong> technologies used and specifics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> implementation.“Update to <strong>the</strong> EAP Applicability Statement” - editorship has changed from Stefan to a Ciscoemployee and <strong>the</strong> focus has moved from purely RADIUS to support <strong>the</strong> ABFAB work.3b. Support for <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next generation eduroamStefan Winter, RESTINA, continued and covered areas <strong>of</strong> future development. Currently suffers from a “Sudden Death” problem as a client will stopcommunication with an invalid server and <strong>the</strong> connection is left to timeout ra<strong>the</strong>r than anAccess-Reject. This has been fed back to <strong>the</strong> author and an amendment will be considered forsending communication from <strong>the</strong> client to trigger an Access-Reject from <strong>the</strong> server.For all <strong>the</strong>re will be a presentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eduroam Configuration Assistance Tool at TNC2012.3c. The lone access point in South America is inFrench Guyana and contributed by RENATER and not via Latin American participants.Use <strong>of</strong> F-Ticks http://monitor.eduroam.org/f-ticks/ is encouraged for those that haven’tadopted its use for monitoring.3d. Support for eduroam world-wideBrook Sch<strong>of</strong>ield, TERENA provided an update on eduroam world-wide including expandingefforts on world-wide deployment <strong>of</strong> eduroam and <strong>the</strong> Global eduroam Governance Committee(GeGC).Currently <strong>the</strong>re are 54 recognised eduroam deployment countries: 43 countries from <strong>the</strong> GN3eduroam Confederation (31 GN3 members which represents 36 countries, 3 <strong>of</strong> 4 associatemembers and 4 additional countries) and 11 countries from 4 o<strong>the</strong>r continental regions.There are 3 active efforts to fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> deployment <strong>of</strong> eduroam:• ELCIRA – Project proposal to support <strong>the</strong> deployment <strong>of</strong> eduroam in Latin America• UbuntuNet – Interest in supporting eduroam in Sub-Saharan Africa• APAN – Deployment at APAN conferences and encouraging adoption


MINUTESPage 3/3T ITLE / REFERENCE<strong>Minutes</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 27th TF-Mobility & Network MiddlewareMeetingThe TERENA Secretariat, TERENA Members (RedIRIS, GARR, SURFnet, DFN) and <strong>the</strong> GN3eduroam Service Activity are participants in various ways with <strong>the</strong>se initiatives.Chris Phillips, CANARIE asked about monitoring probes to actively exercise eduroamconnections ra<strong>the</strong>r than rely on passive monitoring via user au<strong>the</strong>ntication attempts. Stefanreferred to <strong>the</strong> eduroam in a plug (ERIAP) https://www.terena.org/mailarchives/mobility/msg03277.html,<strong>the</strong> follow-up work by Hideaki Sonehttps://www.terena.org/mail-archives/mobility/msg03279.html and <strong>the</strong> AMeN work <strong>of</strong> SURFnetthat is continuing to evolve. The most public version was <strong>the</strong> eduroam on <strong>the</strong> busses atTNC2009 in Malaga. Stefan cautioned that sufficient bandwidth (via 3G/LTE) is required orusers will complain about <strong>the</strong> service. Chris endeavoured to follow-up on <strong>the</strong>se initiatives andmake contact via <strong>the</strong> GeGC and at TNC2012.3e. Sensor and mesh networkingKurt Bauman, SWITCH provided an update on <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> A4Mesh Project https://a4-mesh.unibe.ch/ which uses multi-hop network layer for <strong>the</strong> transmission <strong>of</strong> AAAA data.Brook questioned whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> sensors used WiFi or ano<strong>the</strong>r wireless mechanism and whe<strong>the</strong>rMQTT was used for <strong>the</strong> transmission <strong>of</strong> sensor data. Kurt could confirm <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> WiFi butdidn’t know <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> particulars. Brook referred <strong>the</strong> audience to http://mqtt.org/ and <strong>the</strong>presentation by Andy Stanford-Clark http://www.slideshare.net/andysc/<strong>the</strong>-house-that-twitterson his use <strong>of</strong> sensor networking and messaging.3f.
