F o r e w o r dThe University of Western Australia was establishedin 1911 through the foresight and determination ofcommunity, business and industry leaders who sawthe need to develop intellectual and creative resourcesfor our state’s rapidly expanding economy.That vision has been reinforced and realised throughthe generosity of succeeding generations, and theUniversity has grown to the institution it is today throughmany bequests and gifts, the most significant from ourfounding father and first Chancellor, Sir John WinthropHackett. Sir John’s bequest of £425,000 financedthe University’s fine historic buildings and capitalendowments.Over the years, many more bequests and gifts, bothlarge and small, have funded our extensive cultural andsporting facilities and most importantly, establishedhundreds more endowments which will fund academicpositions, research, scholarships and prizes in perpetuity.The University’s Hackett Foundation was created in1998 to continue and promote this wonderful traditionof philanthropy. With the support of the Office ofDevelopment, the Foundation embraces the University’scampaigns and appeals, effectively overseeing allfundraising efforts across the campus. Since then, greatsuccess has been achieved, and the Hackett Foundationhas raised more than $105 million, with $47.9 millionreceipted and over $57.4 million written in pledgesand bequests.On behalf of the Hackett Foundation Patrons andThe University of Western Australia I extend my thanksto all our volunteers, benefactors, alumni and friends whocontinue to support the important work of our University.Sir Rod EddingtonChairman
