Lt. Governor James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr.<br />

Presented <strong>to</strong> the 28th International Conference On Ocean Offshore And Arctic Engineering<br />

May 31–June 5, 2009<br />

On behalf of the people of Hawai‘i, we send our personal<br />

greetings of aloha <strong>to</strong> everyone participating in<br />

the 28th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore<br />

<strong>and</strong> Arctic Engineering at the Shera<strong>to</strong>n Waikīkī Hotel.<br />

Organized by the American Society of Mechanical<br />

Engineers, the Ocean, Offshore <strong>and</strong> Arctic Engineering<br />

Division of the International Petroleum Technology<br />

Institute <strong>and</strong> the University of Hawai‘i, this conference<br />

serves as a forum for researchers, engineers, managers,<br />

technicians <strong>and</strong> students from around the world <strong>to</strong><br />

meet <strong>and</strong> discuss advances in technology. In addition,<br />

participants will be able <strong>to</strong> exchange ideas <strong>and</strong> experiences<br />

while promoting technological progress <strong>and</strong> its<br />

application in the industry, promoting international<br />

cooperation in ocean, offshore <strong>and</strong> arctic engineering.<br />

We welcome the attendees who are visiting from out<br />

of state, <strong>and</strong> hope they will take the time <strong>to</strong> familiarize<br />

themselves with the Hawai‘i Clean Energy Initiative,<br />

which seeks <strong>to</strong> generate 70 percent or more of the<br />

state’s power through clean energy by 2030.<br />

We are pleased Minority Leader Rep. Cynthia<br />

Thielen of the Hawai‘i House of Representatives, a<br />

long-time clean energy advocate, will be featured as a<br />

speaker on renewable energies in Hawai‘i. We also wish<br />

<strong>to</strong> welcome this year’s other keynote lecturers including,<br />

Robert Ryan, vice president of Global Exploration,<br />

Chevron, <strong>and</strong> John Murray, direc<strong>to</strong>r of technology<br />

development with FloaTEC LLC, Hous<strong>to</strong>n. Our best<br />

wishes for a successful conference.<br />
