Pearls from the Past by Don A. Sanford, historian emeritusWhat’sin a name?In October, the North CentralAssociation held its annual meetingat the New Auburn, Wis., SeventhDay Baptist Church. During the gathering,participants marked the 50thanniversary of the dedication of thechurch’s sanctuary.That 1957 building replaced asingle-room, 20 by 30-foot churchbuilt in 1879. Designed by WayneRood, the new structure was madeof local sandstone and salvage materialfrom a dismantled urban church.Professional labor was limited, butover 5,000 hours of volunteer laborwent into the project. Total costwas about $10,000.The original church building resembleda rural school house, exceptfor a small cloakroom entrance anda bell tower steeple. That first churchbore the name Cartwright, after thelumber town where it was located.The town’s founder, DavidWarren Cartwright, had an illustriouscareer among SeventhDay Baptists in New York Stateas well as Wisconsin.Cartwright’s early life on the NewYork frontier was not easy. Althoughhe had almost no formal schooling,his important life experiences wererecorded in a book by Mary Baileyof Milton, Wis.Various travels carried him crosscountryto California, and he alsoexplored northern Michigan extensively.In 1842, he settled on a farmin Jefferson County, Wisconsin.Upon retiring from farming, hemoved to Milton (in Rock County),where he became a member of thatcommunity’s SDB church.The New Auburn, Wis., Seventh Day Baptist Church.In 1875, Cartwright self-publisheda 280-page book entitled, NaturalHistory of Western Wild Animals,and Guide for Hunters, Trappersand Sportsmen. He also served onMilton College’s Board of Trusteesfrom 1873 to 1881, contributingmany of his biological and botanicalspecimens to that school’s ScienceDepartment.The 1900 January issues ofthe Sabbath Recorder containeda detailed account of Cartwright’sexploits, including his role in whateventually became known as NewAuburn, Wis.“In 1875 [Cartwright] made atrip into Chippawa County wherehe found an area at considerabledistance from any large stream,but was thickly covered with largepine and hard-wood trees, andhaving somewhat clayey soil, morethan ordinarily productive for theregion. Here he claimed two hundredacres of government land,and afterwards secured timberedquarters and half sections inthe vicinity. In partnership withtwo of his sons, he erected asteam sawmill and soon furnishedthe market with pine lumberof superior quality.“He persuaded some formerfriends from other portions ofthe state to move to the place. Thenucleus of a village was formed andafter a few years it had a flourishingstore, shops, a school house anda church for the Seventh Day Baptistswhich was organized in 1879and admitted to the North-westernAssociation. Mr. Cartwright becamean early member having transferredhis standing from the MiltonChurch on June 20, 1880.“The Chicago and NorthwesternRailroad extended its railroad fromEau Claire to Ashland and Superiorwith its station, a post office, as wellas the Seventh Day Baptist Church,all bearing the name Cartwright.14 The SR —Page sponsored in memory of Pastor Al and Janette Rogers by Joanne Droppers
However, when in 1902 the ownerof the local hotel and restaurantapplied for a liquor license, DavidCartwright determined that notown selling liquor could disgracethe Cartwright name. Thus, the villagevoted to change its name toAuburn, but since there was a neighboringarea which already claimedthe name Auburn, they chose NewAuburn for its legal name.”When the owner ofthe local hotel appliedfor a liquor license,Cartwright determinedthat no town sellingliquor could disgracethe Cartwright name.The Seventh Day Baptist churchretained the name Cartwrightin its official reports to GeneralConference until 1921.One can only speculate whyit maintained “Cartwright” afterits postal address became NewAuburn. Perhaps they wantedto avoid confusion with the NewAuburn SDB Church in Minnesota,about 100 miles to the west.(That church was established in1865, some 17 years prior to theCartwright church.)Shortly after the name changefrom Cartwright to New Auburn,Rev. Perrie (Fitz Randolph) Burdickbecame the pastor of theCartwright church (from 1905-06).To add to the confusion, she was thewife of Rev. Leon Burdick, pastorof the New Auburn, Minn., church.The Minnesota church didn’tdisband until about 1920, no longerreporting to General Conference.The 1921 SDB Yearbook finally listedthe Cartwright church as NewAuburn, a more accurate postaland geographic name.At the 100th anniversary of thefounding of the Cartwright churchin 1979, this poem was read:In 1879 they came to this landof tree and sod,They paused each Sabbath Dayin worship of their God.From dawn to dusk, they labored,a home for them to build,With countless tasks each day,their lives in deed were filled.As we look back todayacross these hundred years,May we renew once morethe faith that drives out fears.Let’s give to God the glory,that to His name is due,May we respect the Sabbath—’twas made for me and you.As we renew our faithof days long since gone by,Life will have greater meaning—it’s up to you and I.—By Claston BondCalling all artists, ages 4 to 12!Enter the Sabbath RecorderResurrection Cover ContestDo you like to draw?
