Ideal Treatment: A BillingsPolice Officer helped myfamily and treated us withrespect and kindness— PAT LEIKAMOn a particularly nice summer day in June,an hour of sheer terror arose from the depthsof miscommunication; however, thanks to theBillings Police Department the day ended happily.My granddaughter decided the time betweenbus transfers would be a good time to runand get an ice cream cone. Needless to say, shedid not think that it was important to communicateto her younger sibling that she was leaving.When he realized his sister was no longer in hisimmediate area, he panicked and attempted tolocate her. He was very distraught, and in frontof the courthouse a concerned county employeecame to his rescue. The police were called. SinceI also work in the courthouse I just happenedby and to my surprise my grandson was in thelobby. After calming him and understanding hisconcern, I also became very concerned. It waswithin minutes that the Officer arrived and shewas definitely attuned to the situation; she waspatient in questioning my grandson and veryunderstanding of the dilemma we were imagining.Immediately she took action, contactingdispatch, contacting the City bus terminal tocontact their drivers, contacting my daughterat the scheduled meeting place, patrolling theexpected route, and still keeping in contact withmy daughter and me. My family is culturally diverseand at no time did this officer’s reactionsreflect anything other than concern for thesafety of a child.This was the first time the children were allowedto ride the bus alone, a practice run that failedand will not be repeated at least until a very farawayfuture date; however, the reaction of thepolice officer and other officers involved wasphenomenal. The Officer did locate my granddaughter;she did get on a bus and arrived atthe scheduled meeting place late. It was an imminentdisaster that did not happen; however,the bpd reacted without delay, not knowing whatthe circumstances may have been, they treatedthe situation with top priority, and they treatedus with the utmost respect and understanding.This incident happened within a matter of anhour; the officer did not question any possibilitiesof her disappearance, only that she neededto be located. She was terrific and as an exampleof the bpd was outstanding.13.
