GENERAL PRACTICE ACCREDITATIONIn 1991 The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), withthe support of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and CommonwealthGovernment, resolved to develop a set of national Standards for GeneralPractice, with the aim of engaging the profession in a comprehensive processof continuous quality improvement.Throughout the initial planning process, the Interim Steering Committee madeit clear that an independent and voluntary system of practice accreditationshould be developed to enhance the delivery of services and facilities bygeneral practices through a process of continuous quality improvement(RACGP, 2000).The guiding principles on how Standards are applied to the accreditationprocess suggests that accreditation should:• Aim to attain the highest quality of general practice in an achievableand gradual manner• Provide a publicly recognisable measure of quality in general practice• Be voluntary but should have tangible benefits• Be for a defined period• Be an educational and developmental process and not a punitive one• Be in the hands of the profession(RACGP, 2000)There are two accreditation providers for Australia’s General Practices:• Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL)• GPA ACCREDITATION plus.Accreditation involves a three year cycle where the practice:• Performs self-assessment against The RACGP Standards for GeneralPractice• Undergoes a survey visit facilitated by your peers• Commences a continuous quality improvement cycle towards bestpractice• Receives documentary validation and recognition as an accreditedgeneral practice.Most practices have undergone or will be undergoing accreditation/reaccreditationat some stage. Accreditation is a voluntary process but with theintroduction of the link by the Commonwealth Government to the PracticeIncentives Program (PIP), this has encouraged more practices to becomeaccredited.38
