Society HappeningsClubs Recognized for Exceptional Wine Programs2011 Wine Program Awards WinnersCMAA’s International Wine Society announced the winnersfor the Wine Program Awards at this year’s WorldConference in New Orleans. The objective of the WineProgram Awards is to recognize the best club wine programson an annual basis and to laud CMAA member-managedclubs that establish and maintain fine wine programs fortheir membership. These awards are meant to be a hallmarkof quality and assurance of an eminent wine program andshould be used to market the club’s food and beverageprogram to its membership.Awards are given in the categories of Distinction andMerit. Located on a steephillside with thin, red soils and asouthwestern exposure, it provides an excellent environment forgrapes to grow.MdR (Mélanges du Rhone) VineyardThis small vineyard is locatedsoutheast of Paso Robles, CA,in the cool area known as theTempleton Gap. The TempletonGap is a low point in the CoastalRange that allows sea breezes tocool the vineyards in the afternoon.Planted to the Syrah Noir and 877clones on tight four by six footspacing on a vertical trellis, it yielded only two tons per acre.Jeff has worked with vineyard manager/owner Jim Allen formany years and identified this vineyard as something special.As a result of this relationship, Sensorium Wines was able topurchase the 2005 and future harvests from this vineyard.Uvas Creek VineyardThis amazing vineyard is, handsdown, one of the finest CabernetSauvignon vineyards in the SantaCruz Mountains, if not California.Located on a river bench below theUvas Dam, it produces grapes ofincomparable depth and flavor.Expertly tended and manicured byBill Holt, the resulting grapes createwine with a concentration rarely seen in wines from theSanta Cruz Mountains.
