This summer our Facilities staff was again hard at work.The painting crew, comprised of student workers, applied over 230 gallonsof paint, went through 280 roller covers and used 25,440 yards of maskingtape. This may be too much information. I guarantee that no other collegePresident would do this- sorry!In Adams Hall, the bathrooms in the suites were updated with new showerwalls, shower controls and sink faucets.Adams Hall also got a new roof this summer.Adams, Wheeler and Morrill got new energy efficient heat circulatorpumps.Ellis, Wheeler, Morrill and Haskell all got new heating tube bundles for thebuildings. Pretty exciting stuff.Ellis Hall got new carpeting in the hallways, tile in the student rooms, acomplete painting and energy efficient LED lighting in the rooms.We are in the process of improving the ventilation in Glenbrook Gym byreplacing the original ventilation system with modern, energy efficient AirHandlers.And of course, our most exciting project was hooking up the Coffee Cottageto the town sewer system. I know this is why you all came back.On a loftier note, with the inspired leadership of Professor Paul Derby, thePresident’s Green Campus Work Group continues in its sustainability effortswith the ambitious goal of carbon neutrality for the college. The groupis responsible for all recycling efforts on campus as well as coordinatinginitiatives to reduce our consumption of electricity and fossil fuels whilereducing our emission of greenhouse gases. We have recently joined thePower of Three Program with Casella Waste Systems and Foley Services,two prominent local businesses and partners of the college, to implement acertified closed loop recycling system that collects our material, processesit into new products and delivers it back to our door to be used again. Withyour assistance and participation in these endeavors, we can be a shiningexample of environmentally responsible citizenship.
Huden Dining Hall feels more like home. New cabinets, new counters, newsigns, new lights, new china and flatware, a fresh coat of paint, and whilesome walls went up, others have come down. Part of the Sodexo-Castletondining services agreement, this summer JMZ Architects and DEW Constructioncrews completed phase one of the two-phase project. Phase twoof the project will be completed next summer with a new entrance, a renovatedloading dock, and other upgrades to the existing building.In addition to these physical improvements, we are energized by our newpartnership with Sodexo and appreciate their enthusiasm and professionalismas we transform the dining experience on our campus.Next summer we will not only renovate Huden but also Leavenworth Hall,completing the air conditioning of classrooms, better air handling, andenergy efficiency and cosmetic improvements.On a larger scale, we will celebrate the completion of Project 2012 onSeptember 22 during Homecoming. We will dedicate Hoff Hall, the firstbuilding in the state ever named for the governor who did more to supporthigher education than any other, and we will formally open the newFacilities Barns and the Pavilion, where future Convocations may be held;given the crowd today, this seems like a good idea. The Pavilion will alsobe the site of future graduations, orientations, large college meetings, anda variety of college and community activities, including concerts, completewith an attached clear span tent to accommodate up to 3000 guests whenthe event requires larger attendance. In the winter we will transform thePavilion itself into a covered recreational skating rink, open to everyone atthe college and in the community free of charge.With the completion of Project 2012, we will have accomplished everythingwe had dreamt of achieving when we inaugurated our ten yearmaster plan a decade ago. We have carefully and prudently invested $70million into the infrastructure of our campus, all of it designed to enhancethe academic and campus life experience for our students and to improvethe working life of our spectacular staff. Although this term has been usedand abused in our recent national history, it is accurate to say: Mission Accomplished.There is much to celebrate.I recently announced that Dr. Colleen Klatt has been appointed Dean ofCollege Advancement. In this role Colleen will lead the reorganizationand development of a newly formed division focused on advancement andintegrated marketing communication initiatives. We are hopeful that wewill also provide better “customer service” and support to you and to all thevarious entities with whom we work and serve.The College Advancement Office will bring together several talented individualsfrom across campus, allowing for a centralized approach to futuremarketing and development projects. The division will provide a variety
