ANTI-NEWSANTIGRAVITY PICKS FOR THE COMING MONTHBY ERIN HALL & DAN MITCHELL(AND SOMEOF MARCH!)Broken Social Scene: Tuesday, February 15th, 9pm @ Tipitina’sThose Canadians sure like to do it up big. With the number of live performers in thisband ranging from a handful to nearly twenty, seeing Broken Social Scene live is always anew and interesting experience. I’m curious to see how many members they can fit on therelatively small Tipitinas stage this time around. Aside from the mere spectacle of it, theband’s last album, 2010’s Forgiveness Rock Record, was a triumph. Bringing their songs tolife in person often means new interpretationsand instrumentation – multiple guitars ordrum kits, horns, strings etc. – so the show issure to be the opposite of boring. Falling theday after Valentine’s, take the object of youraffection/lust/mouthbreathing to this showinstead of some stuffy restaurant and reap thebenefits of grandiose musical spectacle andthe resulting excitement it produces. —EHBuzzoven, Cough, Mountain of Wizard:Monday, February 7th at SiberiaBroken Social SceneNorth Carolina’s Buzzoven, one of metal’searly sludge progenitors (along withEyehategod) will be bringing their brand ofviolence to the streets of the Marigny earlythis month. Over the years, the band hasBuzzovenmade a name for itself based on its rowdy and often vicious live shows, which almostalways leaves someone in attendance injured. So basically, they rule. In addition to this livedebauchery, their records have also been consistently solid, from their Buttrash demos upthrough their most recent 2010 Relapse compilation release, Violence from the Vault. Withthem, they will be bringing one of this year’s unsung heroes in all things Doom, Cough, whose debut record this past year, Ritual Abuse, was an overlooked album to say the least. The band, while doom at heart, possesses a deranged streak in their songs which willcertainly be appreciated by all of those in attendance looking forward to seeing Buzzovenand “Dixie” Dave Collins. This show is going to be all kinds of crazy, no doubt. —DMMore AG picks, continued on the next page...4
