OPENING STATEMENTThis entire <strong>Handbook</strong> is subject to the laws of the United States and Alaska and policies of the Mat-Su <strong>Borough</strong><strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> and is subject to any <strong>School</strong> Board policy changes.This <strong>Handbook</strong> is intended to be a general guide for parents and students. It should be understood that no onedocument can contain policies to cover every single situation that can occur in a public school setting. Anyquestions that may arise as this document is read should be referred to the principal for clarification and/oranswers.NOTE: It shall be the policy of the Mat-Su <strong>Borough</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> to provide equal educational opportunity toall persons, to prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, marital status, parenthood, age,national origin, or disability, and to promote the full realization of equal educational opportunity in eachdepartment, division, and school unit in the <strong>District</strong>.NOTICE OF AHERA COMPLIANCEThe Mat-Su <strong>Borough</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong>, in order to maintain a safe educational environment in our school facilities,has completed the school inspection and planning requirements as established by the Asbestos HazardEmergency Response Act (AHERA). Our school buildings have been thoroughly inspected for the presence ofasbestos containing materials. Although we have identified asbestos materials in our facilities, these materialsare not “friable” (crushable by hand pressure to release fibers) and do not present a hazard to any of our studentsor our faculty and staff.The Mat-Su <strong>Borough</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> has developed an asbestos Management Plan for all buildings found tocontain asbestos-containing building materials. Interested persons can review the Inspection Report andManagement Plan by contacting maintenance at 376-0806 or calling the Mat-Su <strong>Borough</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong>Superintendent’s Office at 746-9255.SURVEY OF TEACHER AND ADMINISTRATOR PERFORMANCEThese forms provide a means for parents and other community members to provide input to improve the qualityof instruction. These forms are available at the office and on the <strong>District</strong> website.FIRE DRILLS/EARTHQUAKE DRILLS/LOCKDOWNSEvery precaution is taken to ensure the safety of your child during normal school hours. Fire drills are executedonce per month. Earthquake drills and lockdowns are performed periodically during the school year. This is toensure students learn proper safety procedures and adhere to all safety guidelines.DISTRICT POLICY FOR BUILDING EVACUATIONIn an emergency requiring building evacuation, all students and staff will be transported to Goose BayElementary (352-6400) or Snowshoe Elementary (352-9500).5
