AMessagefrom theChairOctober 2014The Medical Devices Fund, established by the Minister forHealth and Minister for MedicalResearch, is now in its secondyear and proving to be a veryworthwhile program. The programindeed highlights a good strongindustry that is innovating asfast as it is growing.Again the Panel was delighted by the numberand quality of applications received this yearwhich were particularly strong in the areas oforthopaedics and diagnostics.Drawing from lessons of the Fund’s inauguralyear, a lot of emphasis was placed on talkingwith clinical experts and establishing linksbetween medical device companies and theNSW clinical base, and I believe this emphasishas resulted in highly clinically-relevantapplications this year.Again the task of assessing these high qualityapplications was not easy and I want to thankthe wonderful members of the Expert Panel –Neville Mitchell, Dr Bob Frater, Michael Still andAdam Spencer, and I welcome and thank newmember Dr Greg Keogh. I also wish to thankthe sub-committee which assisted with theshortlisting and the MDF Secretariat led byDr Tony Penna. But most of all I congratulate the recipientsof the Medical Devices Fund for 2014 whoseinnovative and inspiring work will, withoutquestion, have lasting and meaningful impactson the health system and the community.Mary O’KaneNSW Chief Scientist & EngineerMedical Devices Fund 2014 NSW HEALTH 3
