TOTALRDD BUDGETIN <strong>2004</strong>€ 8 726 1126RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT AIDTHE RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENTPeople in Need began as a humanitarian aid organizationin 1992. Since then, many projects and departmentshave been added to the organization, butthe relief and development department (RDD) stillremains the core of PIN operations. PIN exists to offerassistance to those in need while inspiring othersto do the same. This goal is embodied by thework of RDD, and can be seen in the emphasis RDDputs on the role of local employees and beneficiariesin its projects.PIN projects strive to address the real needs of peopleand are based on direct in-field assessments. Theimplementation teams, comprising a large number ofexpatriate and local staff, offer an invaluable partnershipof foreign expertise and knowledge of the localenvironment. It is this partnership and the presenceof PIN expatriates directly in the field, rather than inoffices and far-off countries, that help PIN deliver efficientand effective relief and development.PIN also strongly believes in the need for cooperationbetween non-governmental organizations.For this reason, PIN cooperates with a number ofCzech and international organizations in order to increasethe impact of PIN projects abroad. PIN is anactive member of the Czech Forum for DevelopmentCooperation, www.fors.cz, (FoRS), and throughFoRS is affiliated with CONCORD. PIN is also a memberof Alliance 2015 (www.alliance2015.org) andEurostep (www.eurostep.org), as well as being registeredwith the European Commission’s HumanitarianAid Office (ECHO) and the United States Agency forInternational Development (USAID).In <strong>2004</strong>, PIN had staff and RDD missions in tencountries – Afghanistan, Armenia, Ethiopia, Iran,Iraq, Jordan, Namibia, Romania, Russia-NorthernCaucasus and Serbia and Montenegro. In the CzechRepublic, PIN wrapped up building and reconstructionprojects as part of the 2002 SOS Floods campaign.<strong>2004</strong> also saw PIN conduct research into futuredevelopment work and new projects.DEVELOPMENT AWARENESSSince 2003, PIN has been involved in raising awarenessof development issues in the public, government,media, non-profit and academic sectors. PINis generating support for active foreign policy in thearea of development at various levels.In <strong>2004</strong>, PIN promoted this idea via supplementsand articles in leading dailies and magazines, organizedseminars, trainings, and study trips for journalistsand government representatives, and publishedbulletins on development issues. PIN also maintainedthe www.rozvojovka.cz website – a comprehensivesource of information, analysis and data ondevelopment.SPECIAL <strong>REPORT</strong>:SOS SRI LANKA 2005Following the Tsunami, PIN raised € 4 300 000 ina public collection, including 161 757 donations viathe new method of mobile phone messaging. In cooperationwith the Alliance 2015 partner GermanAgro Action, PIN decided that its efforts would bemost valuable in Sri Lanka. The first funds were dispersedfrom PIN Club of Friends funds and providedimmediate relief deliveries. PIN sent an assessmentteam to the area and later it was decided thatthe organization would set up operations in theTrincomalee region of northeastern Sri Lanka.PIN’s activities in Sri Lanka are divided into emergencyaid, transitional support and future reconstructionand development. In the emergency phase,PIN spent € 69 000 on food, water, medicine andbasic household goods. In the transition phase, PINinvested in building temporary schools, refurbishingpermanent schools and helping people returnto work by buying fishing nets, tractors, hand carts,tools, canoes and bicycles. PIN also supported psychosocialprograms and other needed activities. Theoverwhelming majority of funds will be used to rebuildhomes and schools and help affected villagesrecover in the development stage of PIN activities.Photo: © M.
