<strong>Year</strong> <strong>II</strong>Chapter 3-<strong>RAMAYANA</strong>obey Rishi Vishwamitra and fulfill all his wishes. The parents blessed the twoyoung princes. They then departed with the sage (Rishi).The party of Vishwamitra, Rama, andLakshmana soon reached Dandaka forestwhere the Rakshasi (demoness) Tatakalived with her son Maareecha. Vishwamitraasked Rama to challenge her. Rama strunghis bow and twanged the string. The wildanimals ran helter-skelter in fear. Tatakaheard the sound and she became incensed.Mad with rage, roaring thundero<strong>us</strong>ly, sher<strong>us</strong>hed at Rama. A fierce battle ensuedbetween the huge Rakshasi and Rama.Finally, Rama pierced her heart with adeadly arrow and Tataka crashed down tothe earth. Vishwamitra was pleased. Hetaught Rama several Mantras (divine chants), with which Rama could summonmany divine weapons (by meditation) in order to fight against evil.Vishwamitra then proceeded, with Rama and Lakshmana, towards his ashram(hermitage). When Vishwamitra and other rishis started the yagna, Rama andLakshmana were guarding the place. Suddenly Maareecha, Tataka's ferocio<strong>us</strong>son, arrived with his followers Subahuand other rakshasas. Rama silentlyprayed and discharged the newlyacquired divine weapons at Maareecha.Maareecha was thrown many, manymiles away into the sea. All otherrakshasas including Subahu were slainby Rama and Lakshmana. Vishwamitracompleted the yagna and the rishisrejoiced and blessed the princes.The next morning, Vishwamitra, Rama, and Lakshmana headed towards thecity of Mithila, the capital of the kingdom of Janaka.32
