POP FLY ContinuedINSIDE THE ENGINEERINGLevers, levers, everywhere. Yup, they’re all around you. You see, leversmake work easier by converting a little effort into a lot of force (like ahammer) or by converting a little movement into a large movement (likea broom or golf club). And who doesn’t want to get more done with lesseffort? Baseball players use a lever every time they are up at bat. Whenyou swing a bat, you move the part you’re holding just a little bit. But theother end of the bat moves a lot! The same with the fl ippers on pinballmachines—a little fl ick sends the ball fl ying. A see-saw is a big lever, though you’d need a lot of force to send someone fl ying! And hundredsof years ago, soldiers hurled heavy stones using catapults, which use alever system to send the rocks fl ying. We think Ping-Pong balls are muchmore civilized! For their water slidechallenge, the Design Squadcast needed to pump water tothe top of a slide to makeit slippery. One team used aseesaw to help push and pullpistons to pump the water.Photo: Mika TomczakIf you liked this challenge, go topbskidsgo.org/designsquad to downloadmore challenges to try at home.Major funding for Design Squad is provided by the NationalScience Foundation and the Intel Foundation.
