RADIO-TELEPHONEPROCEDURERadio communications use specific words (procedural words or‘prowords’) and abbreviations. It is important for all marine radiooperators to use the correct procedure and prowords.The recipient of your call may not have English as their first language, andby following international conventions and using prowords you are morelikely to be understood. Safety or lives may depend on using clearcommunication.Follow this process for ordinary radio communications:• Turn the radio on, adjust the volume and squelch, and select a channel.• Listen. Others may be using the channel for messages more urgentthan your own.• Think. Prepare what you are going to say before you transmit, andkeep your message brief.• When not transmitting, ensure you do not hold down the transmitswitch (Push to Talk or PTT). If this switch is jammed or held down bymistake, it prevents any other person from transmitting any messageson your selected frequency or channel, and your radio cannot receive.• Speak simply and clearly, using the correct prowords.• Avoid using local names, terms and jargon, which will cause confusion.WARNING: some marine radios are equipped with a VHF DSC facility.DSC signals from these radios are not processed by the New ZealandMaritime Radio network. Other, similarly equipped, radios within VHFrange may be able to receive and interpret these signals but this can notbe guaranteed. Procedural words (prowords)It is essential that all stations use the correct terms when using theirradio. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and InternationalTelecommunication Union (ITU) have developed a system of prowordsover many decades that are used primarily to promote safety at sea.Prowords aid comprehension and precision for mariners, whose firstlanguage may not be English. These words are taught to studentoperators around the world.In recent years, other terms that are not prowords have been introducedin New Zealand and other nations, and in some cases are quite widelyused. Some of these additional terms are local in origin and otherscome from American Citizen Band radio and amateur (ham) radio, butthey are not appropriate for maritime communications.Use only the IMO/ITU prowords listed below, without exception.ProwordAffirmativeAll after…All before…CorrectionDisregard, outFigures…From…MeaningYes.
