Control of the Autonomic Nervous System;The hypothalamus projects to the parasympathetic vagal nuclei <strong>and</strong> thepreganglionic sympathetic nuclei <strong>and</strong> thus can control autonomic functionincluding heart rate, vasoconstriction, digestion, sweating, etc. Thereappears to be a segregation of function as follows:Stimulate rostral hypothalamus — parasympathetic responses (e.g.,slowed heart rate).Stimulate caudal hypothalamus — sympathetic responses (e.g.,increased heart rate, vasoconstriction, etc.)Disease: alterations in cardiovascular function have been observed incattle with abscesses of the hypothalamus (slowing of heart rate).
