General Studies (AQA)“Beware of the man of one book.”(Thomas Aquinas)Even studying four subjects at AS level is still restricting soall Year 12 students attend a weekly General Lecture aimed atbroadening their knowledge of the world outside their ownparticular subjects.These lectures are given by expert outside speakers and covera whole range of topical subjects in Ethics, The arts, science,technology, politics and economics.At the end of year 12 students can take a General Studiesexamination at AS level.The specification for this examination is covered to a large100% Examinationextent by the General Lectures so the only other preparationneeded is some practice with past papers.Those who are successful at AS level can go on to take thesubject at A2 level in Year 13 when the General Lecture isreplaced by a weekly class more specifically aimed at theexamination.This ‘extra’ A level is accepted in its own right by some HigherEducation institutions and others will take it into accountwhere an applicant is on the borderline for acceptance.There is no coursework. The examination structure at AS isbased on objective questions on written articles provided. Shortessays need to be written at A2 level.
