AsbestosExposureRegisterExposed personnotifies RegistrarForm sent byRegistrarData coded(symptoms, workhistory, smokinghistory)Informationbooklet posted toexposed personFigure 10: Asbestos Exposure Register ProcessThe Ministry, in association with Electricorp Production Ltd, undertook an extensiveadvertising campaign in March and April 1992. Advertisements were published in all themajor newspapers and several trade magazines. The interest generated as a result of this campaign ensured a high response rate for theExposure Register. Notifications were made by individuals, trade unions, occupational healthnurses, doctors, the Asbestos Diseases Association of New Zealand and by some largercompanies.Notifications were directed to branch offices of the Ministry or directly to the Registrar. The Exposure RegisterIn recommendation 4, the committee envisaged that people wishing to be recorded on theasbestos exposure register would have their exposure assessed at an office of theDepartment. Only those people who were judged as having had ‘significant exposure’ wouldthen be recorded on the register. However, the huge response from individuals exposedmade it impractical to screen registrants in this fashion.Once a person notifies MBIE that they have been exposed to asbestos, an asbestos exposureregistration form is sent to them. The form collects information about the individual, theirwork exposure to asbestos and the state of their respiratory health. When the completed form is returned to the registrar, the details are recorded on adatabase. The individual is then sent a copy of Asbestos – A Deadly Dust, which is dedicatedto asbestos and its associated health problems. If the person indicates that they have afamily doctor, the doctor is informed their patient has been included on the AsbestosExposure Register, and is sent a copy of the Ministry’s booklet Asbestos Exposure andDisease: Notes for Medical Practitioners.Asbestos and other Occupational Lung Diseases in New Zealand 2012 Annual Report Page 34
