In January [1957, ed.], physicists were astonished tolearn th<strong>at</strong>, in experiments <strong>at</strong> Columbia <strong>University</strong>, a 20-year-old law <strong>of</strong> physics, known as “the conserv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> parity,” hadbeen upset. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Frauenfelder set out, <strong>at</strong> top speed, to test an independent consequence <strong>of</strong> the upset. He called in the groupin this picture, all his associ<strong>at</strong>es or students, from a variety <strong>of</strong> research projects. Working day and night for 30 days, these menbuilt the appar<strong>at</strong>us shown here and demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed conclusively the predicted consequences <strong>of</strong> the law’s failure. Working as aunit, the scientists proved th<strong>at</strong> an electron emitted from radioactive nuclei as a beta ray has its axis spin aligned parallel toits direction <strong>of</strong> motion.
