Rieder, EdDThe John A. Hartford Foundation, New York, New YorkCorinne H. Rieder was appointedExecutive Director and Treasurer<strong>of</strong> the John A. Hartford Foundationon January 1, 1998. Mr. Hartford,a former president <strong>of</strong> the GreatAtlantic & Pacific Tea Company,established the Foundation in1929. His father had founded theA&P grocery chain in the 1850s.When John and his brotherGeorge died in the 1950s, thebulk <strong>of</strong> their estates were left to the Foundation. Hartford’soverall goal is to increase the nation’s capacity to provideeffective and affordable care to its rapidly aging population.Prior to coming to Hartford, she served as the CorporateSecretary <strong>of</strong> Columbia University, and earlier as the University’sDirector <strong>of</strong> Federal Relations. Before joining Columbia,she was Executive Vice President and Dean <strong>of</strong> BankStreet College <strong>of</strong> Education. She taught strategic planningat both institutions.Dr. Rieder spent the early part <strong>of</strong> her career in Washington,DC, where she was an associate director <strong>of</strong> the NationalInstitute <strong>of</strong> Education, a study director at the Office <strong>of</strong> Managementand Budget, and an advisor in education at theformer Department <strong>of</strong> Health, Education and Welfare. Shealso served as Director <strong>of</strong> Education Planning for the NewYork City Planning Department and a Peace Corps Volunteerin the Dominican Republic.Currently, she is a board member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>American</strong> Federationfor Aging Research; the Visiting Nurse Service <strong>of</strong> NewYork; Expeditionary Learning Schools Outward Bound; andNYU’s Steinhardt School <strong>of</strong> Culture, Education, and HumanDevelopment.Dr. Rieder earned her BA from the University <strong>of</strong> California —Los Angeles, and her EdM and EdD from Harvard University.David Satcher, MD, PhDMorehouse School <strong>of</strong> Medicine, Atlanta, GeorgiaDavid Satcher, MD, PhD, isDirector <strong>of</strong> The Satcher HealthLeadership Institute which wasestablished in 2006 at the MorehouseSchool <strong>of</strong> Medicine in Atlanta,Georgia. The mission <strong>of</strong> theInstitute is to develop a diversegroup <strong>of</strong> public health leaders,foster and support leadershipstrategies, and influence policiestoward the reduction and ultimateelimination <strong>of</strong> disparities in health. The Institute’s programsreflect Dr. Satcher’s experience in improving public healthpolicy and his commitment to eliminating health disparitiesfor underserved groups, such as minorities and the poorand shedding light on neglected issues, such as mentaland sexual health.Dr. Satcher was sworn in as the 16th Surgeon General <strong>of</strong>the United States in 1998. He also served as AssistantSecretary for Health in the Department <strong>of</strong> Health andHuman Services from February 1998 to January 2001,making him only the second person in history to have heldboth positions simultaneously. His tenure <strong>of</strong> public servicealso includes serving as Director <strong>of</strong> the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention (CDC) and Administrator <strong>of</strong>the Toxic Substances and Disease Registry from 1993 to1998. He was the first person to have served as Director<strong>of</strong> the CDC and then Surgeon General <strong>of</strong> the United States.Dr. Satcher has held top leadership positions at theCharles R. Drew University for Medicine and Science,Meharry Medical College, and the Morehouse School <strong>of</strong>Medicine. He has been a Macy Foundation Fellow, RobertWood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar, and a SeniorVisiting Fellow <strong>of</strong> the Kaiser Family Foundation.Dr. Satcher held the position <strong>of</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> the new NationalCenter for Primary Care at the Morehouse School <strong>of</strong>Medicine from 2002 to 2004. He presently occupies thePoussaint-Satcher-Cosby Chair in Mental Health at theMorehouse School <strong>of</strong> Medicine. This recognizes his longcommitment to removing the stigma attached to mentalillness, as evidenced by Mental Health: A Report <strong>of</strong> theSurgeon General, the first Surgeon General’s report onmental health released during his tenure as SurgeonGeneral. As Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary forHealth, Dr. Satcher led the department’s effort to eliminateracial and ethnic disparities in health, an initiative that wasincorporated as one <strong>of</strong> the two major goals <strong>of</strong> HealthyPeople 2010.Dr. Satcher has received over 40 honorary degrees andnumerous distinguished honors including top awards fromthe National Medical Association, the <strong>American</strong> Medical9
