Making the ‘Team of Destiny’Trevor Newquist ’13When TrevorNewquist was 6 years old, he started playingsoccer in Naples, Italy, where his father, a specialagent for the Navy, had been transferred with thefamily.“I lived around a lot of Italians who were crazysoccer fans, so I was inspired by that.”Fast forward to present day, and 21-year-oldNewquist is now captain of the men’s soccerteam at Saint Mary’s College. Since first becominga Gael four years ago, Newquist was instrumentalin turning the College’s soccer programinto a highly competitive franchise. The highlightof his soccer career, he recounted, was scoringthe winning goal in overtime with a head shot thatlaunched “The Team of Destiny” into the NCAAElite Eight last year.“It gave me goose bumps to run around thefield and dog-pile with my brothers, my teammates.It was one of the best moments of myentire life.”The defensive mid-fielder, who garnered alot of attention at his San Diego high school forbeing lead scorer on both the basketball andsoccer teams, had offers to play for UC Davis, UCIrvine and the University of Santa Clara. But heliked the tight-knit community that Saint Mary’soffered. “I love the people here and the smallclass sizes, and the professors are always availablewhen you need them.”The soccer star is only four classes away fromearning a degree in kinesiology, with an emphasisin sports management. While he aspires toplay professional soccer one day, he does havea back-up plan. “I’d like to work with a sportsorganization, like the Giants, in the marketing orcommunications department.”His enthusiasm for Saint Mary’s has rubbedoff on his 19-year-old brother, who attends UCBerkeley. But not for long. “He’s transferringto Saint Mary’s next semester to run track andcross-country,” said Newquist. “He believes SaintMary’s is a place where he can be successful andbe recognized, too.”22YEAR OF THE GAEL
