• Approximately 270 government schoolshave formal <strong>and</strong> informal sister schoolarrangements with schools in overseascountries.• The <strong>Department</strong> conducted student studytours for overseas students on a fee-forservicebasis, placing them in Victoriangovernment schools for periods <strong>of</strong> up toeight weeks.• The Division hosted 148 participants fromHong Kong, South Korea <strong>and</strong> Thail<strong>and</strong> insix pr<strong>of</strong>essional development programsfor secondary <strong>and</strong> elementary teachers <strong>of</strong>English from overseas to support foreigngovernments’ policies to improve teaching,learning <strong>and</strong> use <strong>of</strong> English.• Eighteen Victorian teachers exchangedschools <strong>and</strong> homes for the school year withteachers from Canada, the United States<strong>of</strong> America, the United Kingdom <strong>and</strong> theNetherl<strong>and</strong>s.• Eighty teacher assistants participated inprograms that bring from overseas nativespeakers <strong>of</strong> French, German, Italian <strong>and</strong>Japanese to assist in government schoolswith teaching <strong>and</strong> learning <strong>of</strong> language<strong>and</strong> culture. Negotiations with variousgovernments are proceeding to exp<strong>and</strong>these programs to include support forIndonesian <strong>and</strong> Chinese languages.• The Visiting Journalist program wasinstigated in 2006. This program continuesto bring journalists from various countriesto Melbourne to witness firsth<strong>and</strong> how theinternational student program works <strong>and</strong>what Victorian education has to <strong>of</strong>fer.Marketing <strong>and</strong> communicationsThe Study Melbourne br<strong>and</strong> was developedin 2005 as part <strong>of</strong> the Br<strong>and</strong> Victoria initiativelinking international education with themarketing <strong>of</strong> Victoria’s investment, tourism <strong>and</strong>skilled migration. In 2006–07, the InternationalDivision began rolling out the br<strong>and</strong> on allmarketing, advertising <strong>and</strong> information materialin India, China, Japan <strong>and</strong> the Middle East.Highlights• ‘Friends <strong>of</strong> Victoria’ functions were held inHong Kong, Shanghai <strong>and</strong> Tokyo as part <strong>of</strong>a communication strategy to leverage <strong>of</strong>f thenetworks <strong>of</strong> Victorian alumni.• The website waslaunched in December 2006.• High-quality Study Melbourne marketingcollateral was developed.• A Study Melbourne DVD was translated intoseven additional languages: Cantonese,Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Thai,Spanish, <strong>and</strong> Vietnamese.Information <strong>and</strong>promotionDuring 2006–07, the <strong>Department</strong> promotedschool education, vocational education <strong>and</strong>training, <strong>and</strong> adult community educationthroughout Victoria in a variety <strong>of</strong> ways.The <strong>Department</strong> continued to promotevocational education <strong>and</strong> training inconjunction with the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Innovation,Industry <strong>and</strong> Regional Developmentthroughout the rest <strong>of</strong> the year.Victorian government schoolspromotionThe <strong>Department</strong> produced a number<strong>of</strong> publications for external audiencesin 2006–07. Signifi cant work undertaken in2006–07 aligned all <strong>Department</strong>al onlinecommunications into a single entry publicwebsite .Thisresulted in improved access to information forthe Victorian public <strong>and</strong> school communities.The <strong>Department</strong>’s website averages over halfa million visits every month.<strong>Education</strong> Times continued to be a majorcommunication link with government schools<strong>and</strong> all teachers.
