trinity news thursday I lth november -- page eightJ,/, ii L:k) ’h:1((RugbyCLONTARFCLONTARFm5 pts.BEATENTRINITY--11 pts.Without rising to any great heights, Trinity gave a workmanlikeperformance to win for the third time this season. Clontarf, beatenfinalists last season in the Leinster Cup, are never an easy team todefeat. So it was encouraging that Trinity managed to win althoughnever asserting any dominance over their opponents. In fact themajority of the game took place in Trinity’s half.A strong wind was behindClontarf in the first half and the1st XV pursued the right tacticsin keeping the game tight. Clontarf’spack was strong and solidand for the first time this seasonTrinity’s three-quarters wereoften receiving the ball from aretreating strum. Carroll had anexcellent debut at strum-half,being particularly quick on hisopposite number. The main deficiencyof the side remains thelack of an experienced fly-half.Levis is a sound player, but withdefinite limitations. It might beworth the experiment to playWhittaker at fly-half. NeitherWhittaker nor Morrison wereplaying on Saturday, both beinginjured. Without any penetratingcentres in College rugby, anycentre who tackles hard and lowmust stand a good chance of gettinginto the team. Verso andRees time after time attemptedto tackle by clutching at their opponents’arms. They would dowell to recollect Ray’s fineLadies’ HockeyFEMALEScovering tackle in the first half, coming from behind and aimingat the thighs....... Murphy opened the scoringwith an excellent penalty afterfive minutes, and though Clontarfpressed hard all the firsthalf the score was still 3-0 athalf time. Trinity played less convincinglyin the second half andLevis failed to capitalise on thestrong wind behind him. Clontarf’sfly-half gave Spence an unhappyafternoon and dominatedthe first twenty minutes of thesecond half, during which Clontarfscored a goal to lead 5-3.However, thanks to a muddle inthe Clontarf defence, Rees scoredan unconverted try--following across-kick from Donegan whowas having a fine game on theleft-wing. Five minutes from timeDonegan intercepted a pass and,for the second week running, scored a fine individual try, whichMurphy converted. This was anencouraging win and a hopefulsign for Nov. 27th.FEATUREThe Ladies Hockey 1st XI narrowly lost to Muckross II onSaturday by a lone goal. Goal-keeper Philp, backs Sheppard and Pikeand halves Taylor, Hayes and COx teamed together reasonably wellin defence but the forwards, lacking Morrison, were somewhat disconnectedand did not seem to possess the initiative to score.Next Tuesday, our girls are hosts for the Chilean Cup : this is aninter-varsity competition, involving Queen’s, U.C.D., U.C.G., U.C.C.,and College of Surgeons. Trinity have a bye into the second roundand thus will not be competing until Wednesday, but, if they reachthe finals their supporters will be able to watch them in CollegePark on Thursday.Sports Photo: Tim Cullen.Mary Pike and Mary Bourke in aggressive mood against Muckross IILater in the season, history willbe made in the hockey worldwhen the ladies will accompanythe men on an English tour, encompassing Guildford, Oxford,Cambridge and London. It shouldprove to be some history! With seven of last year’s 1stXI remaining, victories shouldflow in at regular intervals whenthe side is a little more co-ordinated.IIOnly 7d. per copy for student:. McNULTY’S XI~6 NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY--1Leinster’s under 23 team went to Cork on Saturday to continuetheir challenge for the title held by Ulster. They finished level at1-1 with Munster: no mean performance on the home territory ofthe spirited southerners.Leinster missed many chancesearly on and Munster were allowedto settle down. Once theyscored it looked as if the homeside would win, but Leinster’s defenceclosed all the gaps. Yet thevisiting attack failed to equaliseuntil M. Simpson scored after afine shot from Trinity’s S.McNulty had been stopped.T. King’s well-directed passesput Leinster on the attack right atthe start, but all were nullifiedby poor finishing. The forwardsnever got such good chancesagain, and D. Budd, particularly, got very little of the ball. IfLeinster are to succeed againstUlster -- and victory will meanthe under 23 title -- the forwardsmust show more cohesionand penetration. The four Trinity men whoplayed in Cork were in .SMcNuhy’s XI for the matchagainst Nottingham University atLondonbridge Road on Sunday. The home side won 6-1, but theirsuperiority was only confirmed bya burst in the last quarter whichbrought five goals.Driving rain hampered Nottingham’sskilful style, yet theyequalised with a very fine goalafter McNulty’s XI had scoredfirst. The late goal-rush wasmainly due to the spirit of thehome forwards who drovethrough, backed up and shot witha new-found dynamism. M. deWit (4), T. King and E. Bradshawscored the goals for McNulty’s XI.The 2nd XI defeated RailwayUnion 2-0 (de Wit 2) and thusmeet Pembroke II’s in the cupsemi-final.PERSONAL2d. per word. Minimum2/6. To promote furtherunion within the cub, we proposethe following suggestions :--I. A 7-a-side tournament to beplayed either towards the end ofthe season or during Trinity term.2. In the D.U.F.C. law-book(members, demand a copy!)There is a mention of a KickingCup; the competition for thiscup should be revived immediatelyin order that the art of kickingmay be nurtured to life again.3. All team lists should bepinned up on the board by Wednesdayevening at the latest; alsoan "Accident and Absentees"list should be placed on the boardat the beginning of the week, onwhich members may state theirunavailability to play in forthcomingmatches. But, foremost, it must be rememberedthat D.U.F.C. existsprimarily to provide games ofr,,gby for all its members.Yours faithfully,Reginald V.
