Six named 2012 LSTC Distinguished AlumniThe 2012 Lu<strong>the</strong>ran <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Theology</strong> <strong>at</strong> ChicagoDistinguished Alumni Awards honor six leaderswho have shaped and are reshaping ministry in<strong>the</strong> church. They are <strong>the</strong> Rev. David M. Carlson,Excellence in Parish Ministry Award; Bishop DavidL. deFreese, Called to Lead Award; <strong>the</strong> Rev. RalphE. Eckard, Faithful Servant Award (posthumously);Bishop Donald P. Kreiss, Witness to <strong>the</strong> World Award;<strong>the</strong> Rev. Francisco Javier Goitía Padilla, SpecializedMinistry Award; and <strong>the</strong> Rev. Kyle A. Rouze, EmergingVoice Award. They were honored in an awards ceremonyand reception on March 19 <strong>at</strong> LSTC.In October 1962, Eckard was elected assistantto <strong>the</strong> Rev. Dr. Franklin Clark Fry, president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>new Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Church in America (LCA). He continuedto serve as <strong>the</strong> assistant to <strong>the</strong> denomin<strong>at</strong>ion’spresident until <strong>the</strong> LCA merged with two o<strong>the</strong>rLu<strong>the</strong>ran bodies in 1988 to form <strong>the</strong> EvangelicalLu<strong>the</strong>ran Church in America (ELCA). Over <strong>the</strong> next18 months, he helped to close out LCA affairs andassist <strong>the</strong> new bishop <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ELCA and new agencydirectors in wh<strong>at</strong>ever manner requested.Ralph Eckard died on September 15, 2011, <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>age <strong>of</strong> 84.Bishop David L. deFreese, recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Called toLead Award, received his M.Div. from LSTC in 1982.He served congreg<strong>at</strong>ions in Omaha, Pierce, Bellevue,and Kearney, Nebraska, before being elected bishop<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nebraska Synod in 2000. His leadership ischaracterized as incarn<strong>at</strong>ional, faithful, effective, andlife-giving. The nomin<strong>at</strong>ion st<strong>at</strong>es, “Bishop deFreeseseeks to reflect our mission toge<strong>the</strong>r ra<strong>the</strong>r than2011 Called to Lead Award recipient Mark A. Anderson (1989, M.Div.) andMrs. Anderson“LSTC gives thanks for <strong>the</strong> visionary leadership<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se six distinguished alumni,” said InterimPresident Philip Hougen. “They embody <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong>leaders who are formed <strong>at</strong> LSTC and are examples<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> many faithful ways our alumni serve <strong>the</strong>church.”Recipients lead in parishes, wider churchThe Rev. Ralph E. Eckard, honored posthumouslywith <strong>the</strong> Faithful Servant Award, gradu<strong>at</strong>ed in 1950from <strong>the</strong> Chicago Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Theological Seminary,Maywood, Ill., a predecessor school <strong>of</strong> LSTC. Heserved congreg<strong>at</strong>ions in Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois.In 1961, he was elected assistant to <strong>the</strong> Rev. Dr.Howard A. Weeg, president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Illinois Synod <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> United Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Church in America (ULCA).As <strong>the</strong> ULCA and three o<strong>the</strong>r Lu<strong>the</strong>ran bodiesprepared to merge, he served as secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>synod’s Joint Commission on Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Unity (JCLU)and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Constituting Convention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IllinoisSynod.The Rev. Dr. Paul Weber, (Christ Seminary-Seminex, 1974, M.Div.) recipient<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2011 Special Ministry Distinguished Alumni Award, introduced a newhymn, “So Gre<strong>at</strong> a Cloud <strong>of</strong> Witnesses,” to LSTC.ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> recognition for himself. [He] leads from<strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> those he seeks to lead. . .he is leadingw<strong>here</strong> Jesus would have us all go. . .he always holdsfast to wh<strong>at</strong> is good for <strong>the</strong> church.”The Rev. David M. Carlson is pastor <strong>of</strong> Gloria DeiLu<strong>the</strong>ran Church in Duluth, Minn. His love <strong>of</strong> hisparish, a commitment to <strong>the</strong> larger church, and alove <strong>of</strong> learning and teaching make him <strong>the</strong> recipient<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Excellence in Parish Ministry Award.
