Craig A. Satterlee new president of NorthAmerican Academy of LiturgyThe Rev. Dr. Craig A. Satterlee, Axel Jacob and GerdaMaria (Swanson) Carlson Professor of Homiletics,became president of the North American Academyof Liturgy (NAAL) at its annual meeting in Montreal,Quebec, January 5-8. As president, he will chair theAcademy Committee, which plans the academy’s2013 meeting to be held in Albuquerque, N.M.Satterlee has been a member of NAAL since 1999. In2011, he was elected the organization’s vice president.NAAL promotes collaborative research benefittingmembers’ academic institutions, denominationalconstituencies, and congregations. It is anecumenical and inter-religious association of liturgicalscholars who collaborate in research concerningpublic worship. Its members include specialists inliturgical studies, theologians, artists and musicianswhose work affects liturgical expression and furthersliturgical understanding. Six named 2012 LSTC Distinguished AlumniThe 2012 Lutheran School of Theology at ChicagoDistinguished Alumni Awards honor six leaderswho have shaped and are reshaping ministry inthe church. They are the Rev. David M. Carlson,Excellence in Parish Ministry Award; Bishop DavidL. deFreese, Called to Lead Award; the Rev. RalphE. Eckard, Faithful Servant Award (posthumously);Bishop Donald P. Kreiss, Witness to the World Award;the Rev. Francisco Javier Goitía Padilla, SpecializedMinistry Award; and the Rev. Kyle A. Rouze, EmergingVoice Award. They were honored in an awards ceremonyand reception on March 19 at LSTC.In October 1962, Eckard was elected assistantto the Rev. Dr. Franklin Clark Fry, president of thenew Lutheran Church in America (LCA). He continuedto serve as the assistant to the denomination’spresident until the LCA merged with two otherLutheran bodies in 1988 to form the EvangelicalLutheran Church in America (ELCA). Over the next18 months, he helped to close out LCA affairs andassist the new bishop of the ELCA and new agencydirectors in whatever manner requested.Ralph Eckard died on September 15, 2011, at theage of 84.Bishop David L. deFreese, recipient of the Called toLead Award, received his M.Div. from LSTC in 1982.He served congregations in Omaha, Pierce, Bellevue,and Kearney, Nebraska, before being elected bishopof the Nebraska Synod in 2000. His leadership ischaracterized as incarnational, faithful, effective, andlife-giving. The nomination states, “Bishop deFreeseseeks to reflect our mission together rather than2011 Called to Lead Award recipient Mark A. Anderson (1989, M.Div.) andMrs. Anderson“LSTC gives thanks for the visionary leadershipof these six distinguished alumni,” said InterimPresident Philip Hougen. “They embody the type ofleaders who are formed at LSTC and are examplesof the many faithful ways our alumni serve thechurch.”Recipients lead in parishes, wider churchThe Rev. Ralph E. Eckard, honored posthumouslywith the Faithful Servant Award, graduated in 1950from the Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary,Maywood, Ill., a predecessor school of LSTC. Heserved congregations in Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois.In 1961, he was elected assistant to the Rev. Dr.Howard A. Weeg, president of the Illinois Synod ofthe United Lutheran Church in America (ULCA).As the ULCA and three other Lutheran bodiesprepared to merge, he served as secretary of thesynod’s Joint Commission on Lutheran Unity (JCLU)and of the Constituting Convention of the IllinoisSynod.The Rev. Dr. Paul Weber, (Christ Seminary-Seminex, 1974, M.Div.) recipientof the 2011 Special Ministry Distinguished Alumni Award, introduced a newhymn, “So Great a Cloud of Witnesses,” to LSTC.gather the recognition for himself. [He] leads fromthe midst of those he seeks to lead. . .he is leadingwhere Jesus would have us all go. . .he always holdsfast to what is good for the church.”The Rev. David M. Carlson is pastor of Gloria DeiLutheran Church in Duluth, Minn. His love of hisparish, a commitment to the larger church, and alove of learning and teaching make him the recipientof the Excellence in Parish Ministry Award. A2000 Th.M. grad, Pastor Carlson is known among hispeers for his insightful and articulate conversations5
