Conclusions
Shipdex is an electronic protocol to
exchange g technical information
among the whole shipping
community
I prefer to consider it as a new
methodology gy to dramatically y
improve the quality of relationship
among all shipping actors
Shipdex is a new first step into a new “shipping era”
Shipdex Conference • 16 February 2010 • Augsburg, Germany 6

The Shipdex protocol
Shipdex Conference • 16 February 2010 • Augsburg, Germany 7

The Shipdex protocol
Shipdex is the International Business Rule (The Protocol) to be
applied to ASD S1000D issue 2.3 to standardise the
production d ti andd th the exchange h off ttechnical h i l dt data within ithi th the
shipping community
Th The scopeoff Th The PProtocol t l iis tto standardize t d di th the dt data exchange h
related to the information currently supplied in the form of
Technical Manuals (on paper or in electronic format)
Shipdex exchanges data in a neutral and standardised format
(XML). This means that it can be implemented by anyone on
different Information Technology systems
The collection of technical data for a given product is called
“Shipdex dataset”
Shipdex Conference • 16 February 2010 • Augsburg, Germany 8

The Shipdex protocol
A Shipdex dataset can be composed up to the following
Information Sets:
o Description and operation: descriptive and operational
information
o Maintenance procedure: p for maintenance tasks information
o Troubleshooting: for troubleshooting information
o Illustrated parts p data: for spare p parts p information
o Service Letter: for changes information (to be completed)
Customers can decide which Information Sets are required for a
specific product/contract
Shipdex Conference • 16 February 2010 • Augsburg, Germany 9

The Shipdex protocol
Every Shipdex information set is governed by a specific
ASD S1000D 2.3 XML schema (to be considered as a
mandatory template)
Every Shipdex information set is composed of XML Data
Modules (data granularity) and related information
objects (illustrations, audio, video in different electronic
formats) and external documents (in PDF format)
 Theabovestructureallowsthesamesourcedatatobe
The Shipdex protocol
Datasets produced by different manufacturers have the same
standardised structure and contain the same information
ttypologies l i ( (same quantity tit and d quality lit of f data), d t ) based b don the th
specific XML schemas
Datasets are developed in XML format and contain only
technical information (content separated from the layout)
Datasets layout is automatically generated applying style
sheets for paper (pdf) and/or video representation
Datasets produced by different manufacturers will have the
same layout, based on the selected style sheet
The same source data can be used to produce different
Shipdex datasets for different customers
