Editorial 

“Darwinian” economics 

The economic crisis has different readings, but History, as most often happens, 

can teach us a lot. 

2009 could have coincided with the crisis’ highest point and, therefore, with the 

predictable path towards recovery. These difficulties have taught us that nothing will 

be the same again, namely that the current production system will not be able to 

ensure our survival. There is a need for a change of gear through innovation. 

2009 has coincided with the bicentenary of Charles Darwin’s birth, father of the 

theory of natural selection of species. Just a year after his death the economist 

Joseph Schumpeter was born, who is considered the natural successor, in an economic 

perspective, of Darwin’s theory. 

Schumpeter asserted the idea that economic development depends mainly on the 

technological innovations introduced by a small group of businessmen and also 

that these innovations are possible if they are accompanied by the creation of bank 

credit and stimulated by a profit expectation. 

This idea is followed by the theory of “creative destruction” as an engine of economic 

development. Schumpeter and Darwin are on the same line: in nature the 

strongest survives, but this strength is not intended as physical, but as intelligence, 

innovation and sometimes even luck. 

These theories have had several feedbacks in many economic fields and can offer 

a clear indication to understand both difficulties and opportunities to revitalize the 

maritime sector. 

What the market demands is the shipowner’s positive and innovative activity and his 

ability to sense the changing needs of consumers. According to Schumpeter the 

alternation of expanding and recessive phases are part of the market nature. The 

businessman, with his new products, has to raise the economy. 

Today Schumpeter would say we are in a “creative destruction” phase, in a state 

of crisis in which old firms which do not renew themselves die and new realities 

emerge. The question we must ask ourselves is: “Are we the protagonists of this 

change?”. In the case of Grimaldi the answer is yes. The Group’s philosophy has 

always been increasingly innovative in the pursuit of success. If today the market 

requires younger, modern, efficient and environmentally friendly vessels, then our 

Group is strong according to Darwin’s theory and is ready to respond to its customers’ 

requests. 

These topics have been widely discussed at the recent XIII Euromed Convention 

held in Cagliari, whose theme was “Environmental and economic sustainable mobility”. 

The Group’s largely implemented investment plan was reflected, inter alia, in 

the construction of four modern cruise ferries, the last of which, the Cruise Olympia, 

was recently launched, and will be in service mid of 2010. These modern units are 

highly environmentally friendly because they combine speed, comfort and high 

performance with a very low fuel consumption. Which today is what both nature 

and the market demand. These vessels are the result of an important research 

programme. Furthermore, from the beginning of 2010 two revolutionary ro/ro units, 

now under construction in Korea, will be deployed. They are revolutionary because 

they will significantly cut CO² emissions: about 750 kg per trailer while back in 1980 

the emissions were 2,500 kg per trailer, a reduction in thirty years of over 70%. The 

question of economic efficiency should marry the ethical value of the environment’s 

preservation and this has always been understood by our group. 

The Grimaldi fleet is, therefore, the model required by the market, with its innovative 

and technologically advanced vessels. But the Group cannot do everything alone; 

we need a strong contribution from everyone, especially from National Governments 

and the European Commission, to force the scrapping of vessels older than 

thirty years, thus resulting in a fleet rejuvenation. In this case, shipyards would 

receive new contracts that would have positive effects on employment while the 

whole community would also benefit from a reduction of harmful emissions through 

the use of more environmentally friendly ships.

The latest addition to the 

Group’s fleet took to the wa- 

ter in perfect style at the end 

of a spectacular operation 

with “launching stocks slop- 

ing down at the fore end”. The 

Godmother was Maria Con- 

suelo Fuduli Grimaldi, sister 

of Emanuele Grimaldi, CEO of Minoan 

Lines, the Group Company to which the 

new unit will be assigned. 

The launch event was attended by hun- 

dreds of invited guests, including Fincan- 

tieri’s CEO Giuseppe Bono. 

The Cruise Olympia is due for delivery 

in June 2010, when she will join her sis- 

ter ship Cruise Europa, which has been 

operating since October 2009 on the 

Ancona-Igoumenitsa-Patras route. Both 

vessels are the Mediterranean’s largest 

cruise ferries, superbly appointed to the 

same high standards as fully fledged 

liners in terms both of public areas and 

cabins, as well as of the vast range of fa- 

cilities offered; the latter include an à la 

carte restaurant plus another self-service 

restaurant, bars, a casino, wellness area, 

gym, swimming pool, disco, shops, a 

meeting room, show lounge, two lounges 

reserved for truck drivers, internet point, 

video-gaming and kids’ playroom. 

225 metres in length and 31 metres in 

breadth, with 54,310 gross tonnage and 

carrying capacity of 250 vehicles and 

3,000 linear metres of rolling cargoes, 

the Cruise Olympia can accommodate 

up to 3,000 passengers in 413 ultra-com- 

fortable cabins, including 18 owner’s 

and 50 junior suites, plus 548 reclining 

armchairs (114 in first class). With a cruis- 

ing speed of 28 knots, she can make the 

crossing from Ancona to Patras via Igou- 

menitsa in just 22 hours.

“Green Star” certificate by RI- 

NA (Italian Shipping Register) 

which classifies vessels that 

are designed, built and managed 

as models of environmental compliance 

excellence, thanks to Clear Air 

and Clean Sea notations. 

“The Cruise Olympia,” commented 

Emanuele Grimaldi, “is another example 

of how it is possible to combine the highest 

quality service with the concept of low 

cost travel. Indeed, thanks to the economies 

of scale and scope generated, this 

type of vessel can offer highly competitive 

freight rates for rolling cargoes plus 

a low cost pricing policy for passengers, 

while still providing cruise ship standard 

services. The Cruise Olympia,” Mr 

Grimaldi concluded, “confirms the revolutionary 

vision of goods and passenger 

transport that our Group has introduced 

on the Adriatic routes between Italy and 

Greece – a strategy that will definitely 

have long-term benefits for the economies 

of both countries, for European 

transport companies and for tourism in 

this area of the Mediterranean.”

organises annually, was held from 

22 to 25 October 2009 at Santa Margh- 

erita di Pula (Sardinia) at the prestigious 

Forte Village Resort. Over 400 delegates 

including authorities, port and maritime 

institutions, shippers, professionals, as 

well as national and international media 

representatives attended the event, this 

year’s theme being: “Environmental and 

Economic sustainable mobility”. 

Speakers at the conference were Luis 

Francisco Valente de Oliveira, European 

Coordinator of the “Motorways of the Sea”; 

Paolo Fadda, Chairman of the Cagliari 

Port Authority; Rafael Aznar, Chairman 

of the Valencia Port Authority; Paolo Piro, 

Chairman of the Olbia, Porto Torres and 

Golfo Aranci Port Authority; Tommaso 

Affinita, CEO of RAM (Rete Autostrade 

Mediterranee); Jordi Valls, Chairman of 

the Barcelona Port Authority; and Fabio 

Ciani, Chairman of the Civitavecchia Port 

Authority. Proceedings were chaired by 

Alfons Guinier, Secretary General of EC- 

SA (European Community Shipowners’ 

Associations). 

In his speech Emanuele Grimaldi, co- 

Managing Director of the Grimaldi Group, 

explained how the effects of the global 

downturn have been far less severe in 

the Ro-Ro sector insofar as the latter is 

not subject to over-capacity. “The Ro-Ro 

fleet,” said Mr Grimaldi, “has a better 

balance than any other shipping sector. 

Fortunately, this is the core business of our 

Group. Of course many of our customers 

have had a marked drop in business, but 

this falloff in demand has not been caused 

by extra tonnage. Actually,” Mr Grimaldi 

went on, “the Ro-Ro transport sector has a 

problem of fleet age rather than capacity.” 

Today 39% of the ships comprising the 

world Ro-Ro fleet are over 30 years old 

and, therefore, ready to be scrapped 

now or in the near future; orders for new 

buildings over the next three years are

equivalent to 14% of the existing fleet. On 

the strength of these figures there should 

be twice as many vessels leaving service 

as entering, with an overall reduction of at 

least 10% in global fleet capacity. Based 

on these statistics and on the assumption 

that you cannot just wait for the recovery 

to happen but rather you must adopt a 

proactive approach and seek to pre-empt 

events, Mr Grimaldi outlined his idea for 

the industry, which he first proposed 

some time ago attracting considerable 

interest in official circles (including dis- 

cussion by EU policy makers): namely 

the scrapping of ships over 30 years of 

age. This proposal has several objectives: 

age reduction and increased energy effi- 

ciency of the Ro-Ro fleet, reduction in toxic 

emissions, enhancement of quality stand- 

ards across the global fleet, with benefits 

in terms of prevention of marine pollution, 

greater safety for passengers and crew, 

more work for shipyards. 

The “Motorways of the Sea” project is the 

only viable alternative to the European 

rail and road networks, which are heavily 

congested. The cleaner and more mod- 

ern the vessels, the more sustainable the 

resulting development and this approach 

is very much in line with global trends to 

reduce the sulphur content of ship fuel. 

“We have been investing for some time 

now,” Mr Grimaldi explained, “in a new, 

competitive and environmentally com- 

pliant fleet. The new ships will boost our 

Motorways of the Sea traffic for both pas- 

sengers and goods. New lines have been 

opened in 2009 connecting Italy with 

Spain, Tunisia, Malta, Libya and Greece. 

The new port calls in Cagliari and Porto 

Torres have generated increased vol- 

umes of cargo and passenger traffic. 

The first two Ro-Ro vessels constructed 

at Hyundai Mipo, due for delivery in 

2010 – each offering carrying capacity of 

3,900 linear metres and 300 vehicles at a 

speed of 23 knots – will be operating on 

the Salerno-Cagliari-Valencia line, while 

the next two will strengthen the Genoa- 

Catania-Libya route. These ships, like 

the three cruise ferries in service in Italy, 

Spain and Greece, will stand out on ac- 

count of their environmental efficiency.” 

The key issues identified by Mr Grimaldi 

were debated and discussed at length by 

the participants in the round table chaired 

by Alfons Guinier. In particular, there was 

general agreement concerning the need 

to scrap the oldest vessels and reduce 

environmental impact. Valls, Ciani and 

Affinita argued, among other things, that 

ports need to improve their infrastructure 

in order to promote short sea shipping.

with the hinterland. Mr Fadda, presenting 

the port of Cagliari, illustrated their devel- 

opment plan providing for two new areas, 

one of which for Ro-Ro traffic. Mr Aznar 

stressed the importance of a “good neigh- 

bour policy” between Mediterranean and 

Middle Eastern countries. Mr Piro pointed 

to short sea shipping as the most efficient 

and environmentally friendly transport 

system and underlined the way that Eu- 

ropean institutions have recognised that 

the sector is a “dynamic alternative in a 

sustainable transport chain”. In conclu- 

sion, Mr Affinita suggested extending the 

Italian ‘ecobonus’ incentive scheme (for 

shippers who shift freight transport from 

the road to the sea) to Europe as a whole. 

During the EuroMed Conference Grimaldi Logistica España (GLE) has 

been awarded as Best Agent of the year 2009 for its great support to 

the Group’s short sea commercial activities. 

The significant growth of the short sea traffic flows between Italy and 

Spain during the last year has been possible thanks to both a strong 

commercial work of the Naples-based Short Sea Commercial Department 

and the assistance of the network of offices of GLE in Spain 

(Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid). 

Among the various agencies of the Group in North Europe and the 

Mediterranean, GLE has been recognised as the most efficient, proactive 

and customer-oriented organisation. The Italy-Spain freight traffic 

flows generated by the Grimaldi Group showed an increase of about 

20% in 2009 compared to the previous year. Moreover, the services 

between the two countries have recorded a 30% growth for passengers.

A new German 

call for Finnlines 

Three weekly departures from the 

port of Rostock to Helsinki

Finnlines has included the Ger- 

man port of Rostock in its route 

network. This has been made possible 

through the replacement of the port of 

Travemünde (Germany) with Rostock, in 

the current three-times-a-week service 

of Finnlines between Travemünde, Gdy- 

nia (Poland) and Helsinki. 

Rostock, an old Hanseatic city with strong 

seafaring and shipbuilding history, is 

situated on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast, 

at the mouth of the Warnow River. The 

location is very favourable as it is a natu- 

ral corridor for freight from South East- 

ern Germany, South Eastern Europe to 

Finland and Russia. The new service 

enables Finnlines to offer three ports on 

the Southern Baltic Sea as a gateway for 

transport to and from Finland; as a result 

Finnlines’ customers can optimise their 

cargo flows from Finland by choosing the 

most suitable port. Passengers will now 

also have an opportunity to choose the 

shortest route for their trip. 

The three weekly departures Rostock- 

Gdynia-Helsinki are now served by 

two “Star-class” ro-pax vessels. The 

transit time Rostock-Gdynia is 14 hours, 

Gdynia-Helsinki 19 hours and Rostock- 

Helsinki 38 hours. 

Apart from the new three-times-a- 

week Rostock-Gdynia-Helsinki service, 

Finnlines operates the direct service 

Travemünde-Helsinki with a transit time 

of just 27 hours. 

“This process-oriented logistic approach 

will enable us to handle cargo flows op- 

timally. With this change we can offer 

an extensive and efficient network for 

the main cargo flows on the Baltic Sea 

and combine them with our passengers’ 

requirements. These modern Star-class 

ro-pax vessels, which entered service 

in 2006 and 2007- are the largest and 

fastest in their class” said Uwe Bakosch, 

CEO of Finnlines PLC- “and are specifi- 

cally built for the weather conditions in 

the Baltic Sea”.

The Grimaldi Group is further committed 

to the Nigerian trade by expanding 

its existing ro/ro terminal 

run by PTML by an extra 60,000 sqm, increasable 

to 100,000 sqm, of dedicated 

vehicle storage capacity. The new additional 

terminal, called Mile2, is located 

at approximately 4 km from the main terminal 

and is connected by a motorised 

barge which offers a transfer capacity of 

up to 250 vehicles daily. This investment 

will increase PTML’s vehicle handling 

capacity by 30%. 

Aside the waterway connection to the 

M2 Terminal, there is also an easy access 

from the main axis road, the Apapa 

Oshodi Expressway, which makes the 

terminal very convenient for receivers 

as it will allow them to avoid the busy 

Tin Can Island port area. Fully equipped 

offices for the Agency as well as all the

Grimaldi has been able to re-es- 

tablish calls at Monrovia (Liberia) to 

serve vehicle, container and project 

shippers. Calls, having frequency 

every 16/18 days, have been added 

to the itinerary of the Eurocargo Ex- 

press Service. Aside from a direct 

connection from Northern Europe,

to allow transhipment of cargo from 

North and South America as well as 

European and Mediterranean out- 

ports, thus ensuring that the entire 

Grimaldi deepsea network is now 

connected to Liberia.

On the 13th of November highranked 

Angolan authorities visited 

the m/v Grande Angola, in the port 

of Luanda. The event was attended by 

Ana Maria Guimarães, Communications 

Vice-Minister in representation to Ana 

Paula dos Santos, Angola’s First Lady 

and President of the Lwini Foundation, 

by João José Kuvingua, Transports Vice 

Minister, by Victor Alexandre Carvalho, 

Merchant Marine managing director 

and many other guests. 

“The m/v Grande Angola is a gain for 

the country” said Mr. Arnaldo Santos, 

managing director of Grimaldi Angola 

“due to the easy, smooth and simultaneous 

commercial operations of different 

commodities it allows”. The vice minister 

Ana Maria Guimarães received by 

Grimaldi a donation for the Lwini Fundation. 

“Companies like Grimaldi allow us 

to reach our social objectives” said Mrs 

Guimarães, commenting the gesture of 

the Group. 

The 52,000-GT Grande Angola is 214 

metres long, 32.25 metres wide and has 

an ideal cargo intake of 2,000 cars/vans, 

plus 2,000 linear metres of rolling cargo 

and 800 TEUs. With a service speed of 

21 knots she can perform the Lisbon- 

Luanda distance in only 9 days.

“Best Line” to Grimaldi Portugal 

On the 26 th of November Grimaldi Portugal was awarded by the local magazine 

“Transportes & Negocios” in the category “Best Line Portugal-Africa” for 2009. The 

award, directly voted by Portuguese shippers and forwarders, reflects the improvement 

of both Grimaldi’s Southern Express and Lisbon Express services, the increase 

of calls at Leixoes and the start of operations in the Angolese port of Lobito. 

ValenciaPort award for “Best business iniziative” 

On the 19 th of November the Grimaldi Group received the IV edition of the Valenciaport Foundation 

Award for the “Best business initiative”. The award was received by Guido Grimaldi, son of Emanuele 

Grimaldi and commercial manager of the short sea shipping Department in Naples. The ceremony 

was held in the “Salon de Actos”, at the building of the Valencia Port Authority, and was attended by 

various guests, among which Rafael Aznar, President of Valenciaport Foundation and President of 

the Valencia Port Authority. 

Efesto Award 

ACL’s quest for quality 

On the 30 th of November, Emanuele Grimaldi, co-managing director of the 

Grimaldi Group, received the Efesto Award 2009 on behalf of the Group at the 

Royal Yacht Club Savoia, in Naples. This award, founded by the Association of 

historical and family-run Companies of the Campania Region “I Centenari”, is 

dedicated to men, associations, companies and institutions having developed 

economic, business initiatives as well as culture dialogue between Mediterranean 

countries. It was motivated by the significant boost given by the Group 

to maritime connections, providing an economic tool as well as a means of 

promoting dialogue between Mediterranean nations, whilst remaining anchored 

to its campanian roots. 

ACL was recognised as one of the highest quality ocean carriers in the North American 

shipper and forwarder survey conducted by Logistics Management Magazine. ACL’s 

Philip W. Byrne, Area Sales Manager - Chicago accepted the 26 th annual Quest for 

Quality Award which is a customer satisfaction survey across all major modes of transportation. 

Ocean carriers were identified by transport buyers, and were then ranked by 

Service Performance, Value, Information Technology, Customer Service and Equipment/ 

Operations: ACL finished among the top in almost every category.

The biggest gas generator 

on short sea route 

On the 21st of November Grimaldi shipped a gas turbine generator from 

Genoa to Catania onboard the m/v Euroferry Sicilia. 

The shipper and customer was Fagioli SpA, an Italian company specialised in 

heavy transport business, who has commissioned to the Grimaldi Group on 

behalf of Ansaldo Energia the shipping of a brand new gas turbine which will 

be used for the building of a new power plant in Priolo Gargallo, near Siracusa. 

The gas turbine weighed 230 tonnes and was fitted on a cradle structure consisting 

of two balance boards resting on two 12-axle & 32-tonne trailers. The convoy was trucked by two special trucks ballasted 

with 40 tonnes, was 66 metres in length and with a weight of 364 tonnes represents the longest and heaviest convoy ever loaded 

on Grimaldi’s short sea lines. The new power plant of Priolo Gargallo belongs to an ENEL SpA project named “Archimede” which 

represents the first worldwide integration between a combined cycle gas and a thermodynamic solar plant. 

Sculptures shipped 

by ACL to Manhattan 

Museum 

ACL transported six weatherproof steel sculpture pieces from 

Liverpool to New York aboard the ro-ro/containership “Atlantic 

Conveyor”. Two of the sculpture pieces totaled 216 tons. 

Upon arrival they were quickly processed and discharged for the 

October 27 exhibition. The “Open Ended” pieces by Richard Serra 

were assembled and now on display at The Gagosian Gallery in 

New York. This concentric structure joins its sister piece, related in 

both form and scale, Blind Spot (2002-2003) bringing both sculptures 

together for the first time. 

Championship speedboats 

choose ACL to reach Florida 

ACL transported the Spirit of Qatar team yachts from Hamburg 

to Portsmouth, Virginia, on its roro/containership, “Atlantic Concert”. 

The yachts with a trailer of Lamborghini engines were shipped 

to participate to the 29th Key West World Championships in Florida. 

The powerboats and trailers each had a 19.4-meter length, 3.03-meter width and 

a 4.7 - meter height and were on self-propelled trailers and secured onto the giant 

Atlantic Concert decks. Once discharged, the yachts were trucked to Key West, 

where The Spirit of Qatar 95 Team recorded a winning average speed of 153.56 

kph and finished three seconds in front of their sister vessel, Spirit of Qatar 96. 

A “ghost forest”on m/v Grande Argentina 

T he m/v Grande Argentina was selected to transport an unusual out of gauge cargo from Takoradi (Ghana) to Tilbury (UK). Using 

Grimaldi mafi trailers, the vessel was the perfect choice to provide sea transportation for ten tree stumps with roots attached and 

upto nearly 4 metres in diameter. Having started their journey in a commercially logged tropical rainforest in the Suhuma forest reserve 

in western Ghana, the stumps were destined to raise awareness of the problems of deforestation and formed a striking installation 

in London's Trafalgar Square enroute to Copenhagen to coincide with the UN Climate Change Summit Meeting of last December.
