Cankii SuttaTo the Brahmin CankiiI heard thus:At one time the Blessed One touring Kosala, with a large<strong>com</strong>munity of monks, came to the Brahmin village Opasaada.The Blessed One abode in the sporting Sala forest to thenorth of Opasaada. At that time the Brahmin Cankii lived inOpasaada, endowed with seven marks of a Great Man. Hewas supplied grass, firewood, water and grains, by kingPasenadi of Kosala as royal gifts. The Brahminhouseholders of Opasaada heard. The good recluse Gotama,gone forth homeless, from the clan of the Sakyas is touringthe Kosala country with a large <strong>com</strong>munity of monks, hasarrived in Opasaada. This fame has spread of that goodGotama. He is blessed, perfect and rightfully enlightened,endowed with knowledge and conduct, gone well, knows theworlds, is the in<strong>com</strong>parable tamer of those to be tamed,teacher of gods and men, enlightened and blessed. Heteaches this world of gods and men, together with its MarasBrahmas, recluses and Brahmins, a Teaching, by himselfknown and realized. That Teaching is good at the beginning,in the middle and in the end, with meanings even in theletters. That Teaching proclaims the <strong>com</strong>plete and pure holylife. It is good to see such perfect ones.The Brahmin householders, left Opasaada, and gatheringand increasing in numbers went towards the sporting Salaforest to the north of Opasaada. At this time the BrahminCankii, was sleeping in the day, in his chamber, on the upperstory of his house.
