He tells us we’re about aweek too early for the whales, whom<strong>at</strong>e here from mid-January throughMarch before migr<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g north tofeed. Instead, we pay Roberto 1,500pesos (US$42) each for a bo<strong>at</strong> tour ofthe Parque Nacional los Hait<strong>is</strong>es, an83-square-mile n<strong>at</strong>ure preserve ofmangroves reached only by w<strong>at</strong>er.The D.R. boasts an impressivenumber of protected n<strong>at</strong>ural areas,<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 19 n<strong>at</strong>ional parks and sixscientific reserves, and th<strong>at</strong> number <strong>is</strong>grow<strong>in</strong>g. Some — such as theSantuario de Mamíferos Mar<strong>in</strong>os,north of the Samaná Pen<strong>in</strong>sula — areunderw<strong>at</strong>er sanctuaries th<strong>at</strong> c<strong>at</strong>er todivers. In all, several species of sea turtles,303 types of birds, 33 landmammals, and 5,600 varieties of plantsare found <strong>in</strong> the country, and th<strong>at</strong>’s notto mention the sea life th<strong>at</strong> abounds <strong>in</strong>the coral reefs. The white-powder beachslips under lapp<strong>in</strong>g waves, and K<strong>at</strong> and I lose track of timeloung<strong>in</strong>g under coconut trees. We stroll the beach, admir<strong>in</strong>gHaitian pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs for sale <strong>at</strong> a stall, before enjoy<strong>in</strong>g pred<strong>in</strong>nercocktails as we try to decide which of the resort’srestaurants we should try to<strong>night</strong>. After d<strong>in</strong>ner, we brieflyconsider c<strong>at</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>g a Dom<strong>in</strong>ican-themed show, but we have along drive tomorrow, so we retire to our room.A Tale Of Two YumasK<strong>at</strong> and I have packed our bags, and we’re ready to trade ourhome base on the east coast for one <strong>in</strong> Puerto Pl<strong>at</strong>a. We havea 250-mile ride ahead of us and many places to see along theway. La Niña heads south toward San Rafael del Yuma, nearthe home of Juan Ponce de León, who arrived on H<strong>is</strong>paniola<strong>in</strong> 1493, after Columbus’ second voyage. In1513, Ponce de León set sail, land<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>wh<strong>at</strong> he would name Florida. H<strong>is</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>m<strong>is</strong>sion was to f<strong>in</strong>d gold, but legend hashim search<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong> for the Founta<strong>in</strong>of Youth.The Founta<strong>in</strong> of Youth might beeasier to f<strong>in</strong>d than h<strong>is</strong> house. We’reexpect<strong>in</strong>g billboards po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g to wh<strong>at</strong>we’re sure <strong>is</strong> a major tour<strong>is</strong>t draw, butthere’s noth<strong>in</strong>g along quiet Highway 4but fields of sugar cane. Our GPS shows we’re near the area,so we beg<strong>in</strong> ask<strong>in</strong>g residents of San Rafael del Yuma fordirections. After a right and a left, we pass a cemetery, then wecome to a dirt road th<strong>at</strong> r<strong>is</strong>es toward the Río Duey. We perkup as we notice an open wooden g<strong>at</strong>e with the hours ofoper<strong>at</strong>ion hand-pa<strong>in</strong>ted on it. Past the g<strong>at</strong>e, we’re el<strong>at</strong>ed tod<strong>is</strong>cover Ponce de León’s st<strong>at</strong>ely two-story home, a fortress ofa structure. A guide greets us and uncha<strong>in</strong>s the massive frontdoors. We pay 30 pesos (less than $1) each and explore theexplorer’s home, which he shared with h<strong>is</strong> wife and children.The c<strong>at</strong>ch of the day for sale <strong>in</strong> Boca de Yuma.Orig<strong>in</strong>al furniture, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong> bed,as well as h<strong>is</strong> armor and artifacts foundon the grounds provide us with aglimpse <strong>at</strong> life here <strong>in</strong> the 16th century.(In case you have trouble f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gthe home, the GPS coord<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>es werecorded for the house are N 18º26.482,W 068º40.752.)Cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g south a few miles, wearrive <strong>at</strong> Boca de Yuma, a f<strong>is</strong>h<strong>in</strong>g villagejust north of the Parque Nacionaldel Este and Isla Saona, which <strong>is</strong> an<strong>is</strong>land n<strong>at</strong>ure preserve. Aga<strong>in</strong>, we’resurpr<strong>is</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong> th<strong>is</strong> gorgeous piece of oceanfront property<strong>is</strong>n’t overrun with tour<strong>is</strong>ts and hotels. We stop <strong>at</strong> BrújulaRestaurant, where a man named Rafael <strong>in</strong>troduces us to thepopular santo libre — rum and Sprite. We d<strong>in</strong>e on seafoodth<strong>at</strong> must have been swimm<strong>in</strong>g an hour ago, and w<strong>at</strong>chlocals play dom<strong>in</strong>os on their lunch break.After lunch, we stroll down the ma<strong>in</strong> street, pass<strong>in</strong>g by awoman sell<strong>in</strong>g freshly caught lobster. After learn<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> we’retur<strong>is</strong>tas, the woman asks us why we’re here. “Porque es bonito”(“Because it’s pretty”), we respond. The woman puts downAltos de Chavón overlooks the Chavón River.


her lobster and takes us by the hand, lead<strong>in</strong>g us around a cornerto the ru<strong>in</strong>s of a Span<strong>is</strong>h fort with rusty cannonsoverlook<strong>in</strong>g the bay. Men cast nets from brightly pa<strong>in</strong>tedbo<strong>at</strong>s bobb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the turquo<strong>is</strong>e w<strong>at</strong>er. Scann<strong>in</strong>g for dolph<strong>in</strong>sper her <strong>in</strong>structions, and sipp<strong>in</strong>g Presidente beer, we beg<strong>in</strong> towonder how much a house would cost here.Mediterranean On The CaribbeanPuerto Pl<strong>at</strong>a <strong>is</strong> still far away, and we’ve been itch<strong>in</strong>g to checkout nearby Altos de Chavón, so we hit the road. Near LaRomana, on the grounds of the Casa de Campos resort, Altosde Chavón <strong>is</strong> a replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village.Built <strong>in</strong> the 1980s by Gulf+Western founder CharlesBluhdorn as a cultural center for the people of the Dom<strong>in</strong>icanRepublic, Altos de Chavón seems fantastically out of place <strong>in</strong>the D.R. Dom<strong>in</strong>icans <strong>in</strong> period dress mill about, available forphoto opportunities. Art<strong>is</strong>ans sell their wares, and b<strong>is</strong>tros lendthe place a modern European flair. A paddlebo<strong>at</strong> straight outof a Mark Twa<strong>in</strong> story churns the w<strong>at</strong>ers of the Chavón River,and off <strong>in</strong> the d<strong>is</strong>tance, the world-renowned Dye Fore GolfCourse, designed by Pete Dye, challenges even expert players.The whole surreal scene rem<strong>in</strong>ds us of a movie set, andwith good reason. Bluhdorn, whose company ownedParamount Pictures, adored the D.R. Paramount set designerRobert Coppa designed Altos de Chavón, and Dom<strong>in</strong>icanfashion designer Oscar de la Renta, a good friend of the executive,decor<strong>at</strong>ed the hotel rooms <strong>at</strong> Casa de Campo, whereBluhdorn enterta<strong>in</strong>ed many movie execs and stars. The countryserved as a stand-<strong>in</strong> for Cuba <strong>in</strong> The Godf<strong>at</strong>her: Part II,and the Chavón River played the part of the Mekong <strong>in</strong>Apocalypse Now. Perhaps if Bluhdorn hadn’t died return<strong>in</strong>gfrom the D.R. to the U.S. <strong>in</strong> 1983, the country would be aCaribbean Hollywood today.We walk over to the Regional Museum of Archeology. Thecur<strong>at</strong>or, Diógenes, d<strong>is</strong>cusses the many Taíno artifacts, art, anddiagrams on d<strong>is</strong>play, and we leave Altos de Chavón for SantoDom<strong>in</strong>go all the more impressed than when we arrived.Capital Ga<strong>in</strong>sOn our way west to Santo Dom<strong>in</strong>go, we stop and w<strong>at</strong>ch afew <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs of a youth baseball practice. Baseball <strong>is</strong> next toreligion <strong>in</strong> the D.R., and many Dom<strong>in</strong>icans, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g AlbertPujols, Hanley Ramírez, and Sammy Sosa have played professionally<strong>in</strong> the United St<strong>at</strong>es. The kids look <strong>at</strong> us quizzicallyCouples still marry <strong>at</strong> the ru<strong>in</strong>s ofthe Monasterio de San Franc<strong>is</strong>co,which was constructed nearly500 years ago.


until I say they’re the next Sammy Sosas, then they put on ashow th<strong>at</strong> makes me believe it.While driv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the rural Dom<strong>in</strong>ican Republic, weencountered bad roads and scary driv<strong>in</strong>g; now, as weapproach Santo Dom<strong>in</strong>go, the roads have improved, but thedriv<strong>in</strong>g, well, put it th<strong>is</strong> way: The only traffic law we can d<strong>is</strong>cern<strong>is</strong>, Don’t hit anyone or anyth<strong>in</strong>g; otherw<strong>is</strong>e, it’s a bit of afree-for-all. And yet, <strong>in</strong> our entire time driv<strong>in</strong>g here we don’tsee one accident. Somehow, it works. K<strong>at</strong>, a MINI Cooperdriver <strong>at</strong> home, steers la Niña like she was born here.Arriv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the capital, we’re delighted to f<strong>in</strong>d a decidedlyEuropean city rich with h<strong>is</strong>tory. We park near the 12-blockZona Colonial, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; nearby, residentsenjoy the restaurants, shops, and sites alongside tour<strong>is</strong>ts.We start <strong>at</strong> the Parque Colón, where a st<strong>at</strong>ue ofChr<strong>is</strong>topher Columbus po<strong>in</strong>ts skyward <strong>in</strong> front of the GothicC<strong>at</strong>edral de Santa María la Menor, the oldest c<strong>at</strong>hedral <strong>in</strong> theNew World. Calle las Damas, the firstpaved street <strong>in</strong> the New World, leads usto the Alcázar de Colón, the palace ofColumbus’ son Diego, who governedhere. At the Torre del Homenaje, weimag<strong>in</strong>e soldiers w<strong>at</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>g from thetower for Engl<strong>is</strong>h buccaneers; and <strong>in</strong> then<strong>at</strong>ional pantheon of IndependencePark we pay respects to the Dom<strong>in</strong>icanheroes, such as Duarte, who areentombed here.Fam<strong>is</strong>hed, K<strong>at</strong> and I f<strong>in</strong>d a sidewalktable along Las Atarazanas, a row of16th-century warehouses th<strong>at</strong> nowhouse cafes and shops. In the d<strong>is</strong>tance,we can make out the modern ColumbusLighthouse, a glass structure built <strong>in</strong>1992 to commemor<strong>at</strong>e the 500thanniversary of Columbus’ first land<strong>in</strong>g.Its light can be seen from Puerto Rico,and the explorer’s rema<strong>in</strong>s f<strong>in</strong>ally resthere, after hav<strong>in</strong>g been moved manytimes throughout the centuries.At <strong>night</strong>, Santo Dom<strong>in</strong>go lights upwith merengue clubs and bars, but weget back <strong>in</strong> the car, navig<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g the citystreets until we f<strong>in</strong>d Highway 1 north toPuerto Pl<strong>at</strong>a, the Silver Port.Port AuthorityPuerto Pl<strong>at</strong>a was a major tobacco port, and its colorfulVictorian build<strong>in</strong>gs with g<strong>in</strong>gerbread fretwork reflect thosetimes and European <strong>in</strong>fluence. The city was founded <strong>in</strong>1502, and was named for the silver-<strong>is</strong>h hue of its beaches <strong>at</strong>sunset. It lies <strong>at</strong> the base of 2,800-foot Pico Isabel de Torres,whose peak we access via a 20-m<strong>in</strong>ute cable-car ride. It’s aclear day, and the views of the ocean and surround<strong>in</strong>gmounta<strong>in</strong>s are stunn<strong>in</strong>g.Closer to sea level, there <strong>is</strong> a charm<strong>in</strong>g plaza with a twostoryBelgian-designed gazebo called La Glorieta, which hasbecome the symbol of Puerto Pl<strong>at</strong>a. Just two blocks away <strong>is</strong>the must-see Museo del Ámbar. Once the home of a wealthyentrepreneurial German family, the museum conta<strong>in</strong>s anexceptional collection of preh<strong>is</strong>toric <strong>in</strong>sects and lizardspreserved <strong>in</strong> amber — fossilized tree res<strong>in</strong>, likely from a nowext<strong>in</strong>ctspecies of a preh<strong>is</strong>toric tree. PuertoPl<strong>at</strong>a amber <strong>is</strong> considered among the best and clearest <strong>in</strong> the world, andthe museum has a gift shop where specimens and jewelry may be purchased.K<strong>at</strong> buys a pair of earr<strong>in</strong>gs made of larimar, a turquo<strong>is</strong>e-likem<strong>in</strong>eral th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> found <strong>in</strong> only one m<strong>in</strong>e worldwide, <strong>in</strong> the Dom<strong>in</strong>icanprov<strong>in</strong>ce of Bahoruco.At the tip of Puerto Pl<strong>at</strong>a’s beachfront malecón, we explore the picturesque16th-century San Felipe Fortress, with its still-present cannonsprimed to pick off nonex<strong>is</strong>tent pir<strong>at</strong>es. As with so many th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> the D.R.,it’s the oldest of its k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> the New World.Before retir<strong>in</strong>g to our resort to dr<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> the Dom<strong>in</strong>ican sun on thebeach, K<strong>at</strong> and I take the tour of the Brugal rum factory, which wasfounded <strong>in</strong> Puerto Pl<strong>at</strong>a <strong>in</strong> 1888. The D.R. has been a lead<strong>in</strong>g rum makerfor centuries, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g not long after Columbus first brought sugar canehere from the <strong>Cana</strong>ry Islands. We enjoy our free samples <strong>at</strong> the end of thetour, and it immedi<strong>at</strong>ely becomes clear why Brugal <strong>is</strong> a n<strong>at</strong>ional favorite.Before long, we’re f<strong>in</strong>ally appreci<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g wh<strong>at</strong> so many come to theD.R. for: beautiful beaches and lull<strong>in</strong>g Caribbean waves. After a fewhours, the sun beg<strong>in</strong>s to ignite the clouds with a pastel palette, and wedecide to take a stroll. A boy approaches us and holds out h<strong>is</strong> hand,reveal<strong>in</strong>g several orn<strong>at</strong>e shells th<strong>at</strong> he has collected.“Lo siento.” I apologize and tell him I don’t have any money.“Es un regalo,” he says. A gift.
