Source: PineBridge Investments <strong>Singapore</strong> LimitedThe <strong>Singapore</strong> stock market rose as much as 3% in mid-May before succumbing to heavy selling towards month-end. For the overall month, the<strong>Singapore</strong> market fell by 2.6%, underperforming regional markets, as fears persisted over weak China manufacturing data and uncertainties overquantitative easing in the U.S. The weaker China flash PMI for May raised concerns of a continued weakening of China's economic growth prospectswhile fears of the U.S. Federal Reserve scaling back its QE3 program spooked investors. Real estate investment trust and interest rate sensitivestocks bore the brunt of selling in May on concerns over higher interest rates.On the economic front, <strong>Singapore</strong> revised up its earlier 1Q2013 figures from -0.6% to +0.2% year-on-year, following an upward revision in servicesand construction output. However, this still represented a moderation of quarterly growth momentum from +3.3% in 4Q2012 to +1.8% in 1Q2013and kept the government's full year growth forecast at 1-3% growth for 2013. Inflation eased sharply in April, falling to +1.5% year-on-year from3.5% year-on-year in March, due mainly to the moderation of costs in transportation. Coupled with persistent yen weakness, the <strong>Singapore</strong> Dollarfell to its lowest in the year, falling significantly against the U.S. Dollar by 2.7% month-on-month.In fixed income, the bond market saw massive sell-off on concerns that the Fed will taper off its asset purchases sooner than expected. U.S.Treasury yields soared and <strong>Singapore</strong> rates followed suit, with the SGS 10-year benchmark rising 45 bps to end the month at 1.8%.The sell-off in the <strong>Singapore</strong> government bond market saw both the index and the fixed income portion registering negative returns. The <strong>Fund</strong>however did outperform the index given its shorter duration. Furthermore, although SGD corporate bonds were also hurt by higher rates, light streetinventory helped keep prices from falling as much as SGS, thus benefiting the <strong>Fund</strong>.The <strong>Fund</strong> fell 2.15% month-on-month, outperforming the benchmark return of -2.57% by 42 bps. Our performance was helped mainly by goodsecurity selection from both equity and fixed income. In equities, our underweight in high yield defensives and our overweight in selective growthcyclical helped performance. On a year-to-date basis, the <strong>Fund</strong> has returned a gain of 3.43% as compared to the benchmark return of 2.65%. Thisrepresents an alpha or outperformance of +78 bps.aia.com.sg


<strong>AIA</strong> <strong>Growth</strong> <strong>Fund</strong> 2During the month, the <strong>Fund</strong> took advantage of the strong equity performance in early May to lighten our equity weightings. We took profit selectivelyon REITs and property names which have performed well and met our target price objectives. Equity purchases totaled $18.6M while sales were$22.1M. In May, we added to DBS Group and took profit on Overseas Union Enterprise specifically.The first quarter earnings season is largely over with modest downward revisions in overall corporate earnings for 2013. Among the notable 1Q2013reports in May, Noble reported a sharp miss in 1Q2013 earnings while Genting <strong>Singapore</strong> also reported earnings which were below expectations.Meanwhile, Golden Agri, First Resources and Wilmar managed to buck the weaker trend in earnings by reporting better than expected 1Q2013numbers due to stronger volume growth and processing margins.While we remain cautiously optimistic on equities in general, we also recognize our return expectations in selective stocks/sectors such as financialsand property REITs have been met and target prices achieved. We are also increasingly cautious on the lofty valuations some of the defensiveyield names have traded up to. As a result, over the past few months, we have taken profit on the sector, reducing our positions in Suntec REIT,Capitamalls Asia, Yanlord and Overseas Union Enterprise, where we felt have discounted most of the upside from asset yield compression andare looking less attractive in terms of valuations.Looking forward, we remain more constructive on companies leveraged towards a cyclical growth recovery as we see an improving externalenvironment and the potential for earnings upgrades in 2013/2014. In this regard, we remain positive in selective growth cyclicals primarily Ezion,Wilmar, Neptune Orient Lines and have also closed our underweight in palm oil through Golden Agri.In fixed income, the risk of the U.S. Treasury yields moving higher on better U.S. economic data and on expectations of asset purchase taperingthat could happen as soon at Q3, will keep <strong>Singapore</strong> rates choppy with an upward bias.
