the background
Wheelhouse Bar & Grill is an innovative casino sports bar
overlooking the Ohio River and Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. The
establishment hosts fans and revelers who can enjoy sports on
more than 40 flat screens and a high-definition theater with the
largest floor-to-ceiling TV in Pittsburgh. Named for the sweet spot
in a baseball player’s swinging range, this venue finds the sweet
spot in the midst of light, materials and media-influenced design.
the challenge
The entire space needed to be designed around how the
movement, sound and light of dozens of television screens
are experienced. With the bar tucked at the end of the casino,
something powerful needed to draw the patron to that space. And
it all had to be done within budget and schedule restrictions.
“Chroma has the translucent quality that makes this
very long bar appear to float in space,” said Floss
Barber. “It’s not just some decorative piece – it’s actually
structural – integrated into the form of the environment
and carved like a sculpture.”
