YOUTH NEWSBZUSY Bounces Back in theSouthwest RegionThe weekend of February 13–15, Rodolfo Madero,Joseph Roe, and Stephen Sias, accompanied by advisorBecca Korn, flew to Austin, Texas for the SouthwestRegion USY Spring Kallah. The El Paso chapter made along overdue appearance at this regional conventionand was greeted warmly by staff and students alike.Almost 100 high schoolers from Austin, Dallas, FortWorth, Houston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City and, ofcourse, El Paso, joined together to celebrate Shabbat at<strong>Congregation</strong> Agudas Achim in Austin for “SWUSY inWonderland.” The weekend services were led entirelyby USYers, from Kabbalat Shabbat Friday night toSunday morning creative Shacharit.Every tasty meal was followed by a lively BirkatHamazon and each activity was conducted with ruach.For the Israel program, SWUSYers divided into groupsrepresenting the different Israeli political parties andthen performed persuasive skits. Saturday afternoon,matches were made during SWUSY Date, a lively gameshow in the spirit of the 90‟s MTV dating show SingledOut. At the conclusion of Shabbat, the group piled intocharter buses for a tip to a downtown Austin improvcomedy club. One member of the comedy troupe inparticular gained the approval of the crowd when heproceeded to throw around Yiddish words and Hebrewphrases. Many USYers from the crowd were invited tothe stage for various acts. Back at Agudas Achim, the“highlighter” dance commenced – loud music, white T-shirts and multi-colored highlighters entertained thecrowd. Recipients enjoyed sweet and salty treats withbeverages to wash them down, as well as a festive footballwhistle and mini football rocket. BZUSY is especiallygrateful to Irvin and Alicia Nadler for their generosity inunderwriting the project. Thank you to all who participatedin the youth group‟s first fundraiser by orderingbaskets and making donations; as a result, three USYersfrom El Paso experienced regional convention for thefirst time.6Rodolfo Madero and friends

In team competition, his team of four studentsalso placed, winning third. The competition was organizedby the TX Society of Professional Engineers. Seth competedagainst 6th-8th grade students from the entire ElPaso area. He will represent El Paso at the Statewide competitionin Austin at the end of March.7
