Gian Piero Demarcus, Italian ArmyMultinational Task Force West medical activities shows that the medical infrastructure ofa territory are usually endangered after a conflict. The sanitary sector of Kosovo isone of the main areas through which we can improve the economic and socialconditions in order to favor the reconstruction of a civil society.The MNTF W CIMIC activities are directed to improve the condition ofliving in this region through intervention aimed especially towardsmedical facilities. There have been several projects performed inorder to facilitate this goal.In immediate humanitarian assistance, MNTF W CIMIC hasprovided first aid, medical examination and laboratorytests for those in need. In 2007 alone, medical assistancewas provided to 68 local people in the medical centreat Camp Villaggio Italia. If the proper capabilitieswere not available here, the patients could be takento hospitals in Italy. The first of these was a boytaken to Rome in March 2001. Since then, 40patients were admitted to Italian hospitalswithout any financial coast to the families ofthe patients.Moreover, the MNTF W CIMIC branchprovides planning and management inmany medical infrastructure projectsproposed by local municipalities andNGOs. There are 15 in the AOR - here aresome examples:- In January the Mental Centre of Pec/Pejëreceived a donation of a 50 kW capacitygenerator. If needed, the electrical supplyis there;- In February a dialysis device wasdelivered to the Dialysis Centre of theRegional Hospital of Djakovica/Gjakovë.It was the result of a request from themunicipality of Djakovica/Gjakovë;- An ambulance equipped with medicaldevices was donated to the firemen ofDecani/Decan in February;- Some dialysis systems will be ready in theRegional Hospital of Pec/Pejë next month;- MNTF W has also built two new operating rooms10KFOR Chronicle, March 2007
