We hold in our hand theBible, which, like nature, is a field for endless investigation.The Bible never grows old. It has been said, ‘Christ nevergave men definitions; he gave them paradoxes. A definitionshuts you up at once; a paradox you can think about till theday of your death.’ Hence we expect to see more and morelight breaking from God’s word. Men who turn away fromseventeenth century creeds can be made to feel that this is arevelation from heaven.“I discover in our communities a growing number of menwho constitute much of the intellectual and moral and businessstrength of our times, men whom we all honor, and manyof them men of Christian faith and prayer, who are not withinour churches as communicants. They are not affiiliated inspirit with unbelief or with extreme liberalism. I have agreat deal of regard for these men, and of sympathy with theirintellectual difficulties. I hope to see the day when they shallconstitute a noble part of our Christian churches. Whetheror not what I deem an obstacle to such results is to be removed,I close my sermon this morning by affirming anewthe universality, the simplicity and the divine earnestness ofthe offer of salvation: ‘Come unto me, all ye that labor andare heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. . . . God so lovedthe world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoeverbelieveth on him should not perish but have everlasting life.Turn ye, turn ye, why will ye die 5’ ”[Yes, here is the trouble: the people have neglected God’sWord, and have accepted as infallible the creeds of the seven-teenth century, made by good, pious, but mistaken men, stillgreatly blinded by the errors of the “dark ages.” The peoplerely upon the ministers and elders, who publicly confess thesame to be their candid views of the real meaning of God’sWord and who solemnly vow before God and men that theywill give diligence in the instructing of others in those doctrines.Yet probably a large majority of these elders andministers have never me+n read doctrines which were 50 momentousthat it required years to decide upon and formulatethem. But then these same ministers felt so sure that theConfession was true that they could swear to believe it withouteven reading it. We trust that the elders of “Dr. JohnHall’s Church” above referred to may prove honest enough,now that they are awake, to be worthy to come to a knowledgeof the truth as it is revealed in the only true Standard-theBible-and that making this good confession in truth andearnestly, they may be counted worthy the name of pillars andelders in the “Church of Christ,” to which (and not to “Dr.Hall’s Church”) belongs the promise of glory, honor and immortality,in God’s due time.Yes, indeed, the controversy on the subject of Calvinism,the basis of the Presbyterian creed, is destined to wake upa great many long asleep; and it will surely in the end separateand divide that system, that the true “wheat” may begathered out into the one Church of Christ. The committee of thePresbyterianHarrisburg,Church convened at the Executive Mansion inPa., on Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock, continuingthrough Wednesday. There were present Rev. Drs. Joseph T.Smith, of Baltimore; R. M. Patterson, of Philadelphia;C. Marquis, of Chicago McCormick Theological Seminary;D.W.H. Green, of Princeton Theological Seminary; W. H. Roberts,of Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati; Francis Brown,of Union Theological Seminary, New York; Hon. James A.Beaver, Governor of Pennsylvania; Hon. Cyrus L. Pershing,of Johnstown, Pa.; Judge Robert N. Wilson, of Philadelphia;Hon. W. E. Dodge, of New York, and E. R.
