lesion from discoloration caused by the dark colored compost. Considering the drynessand fine particle size of the compost and the fact the incidence of foot pad lesions weresimilar at 42 days of age, it suggests it was a discoloration issue rather than abrasion onthe feet. Furthermore, for the first several weeks of age there was some discoloration onthe backs of the chicks reared on compost bedding. This disappeared as the birdsfeathered-out. Incidence of caking was minimal and the same for both bedding types.Table. 4. A larger scale evaluation ofthis material was recently implemented by the cooperating poultry and compostingcompanies on a commercial broiler farm. Initial observations suggest the compostbedding used for this demonstration was too dusty and had a musty odor that will requiredifferent screening and aging process. Once corrected, composting as a treatmentstrategy of these mixed-wood grindings may offer potential as a bedding supplement.18
