MUSICAL AL AL AL A A A A· Chorus students from McCormick sang the National Anthem at aWashington Wild Things game in June 2011.determined by participation in PMEA All-State the previousyear.· Chorus students from McCormick sang and spread holiday cheerto the residents at <strong>West</strong> Hills Rehab in December 2010.· The 4 th and 5 th Grade Allard Singing Tigers performed at the PTOPancake Breakfast in November 2010.· Allard, Brooks and Hyde Elementary Choirs performed theNational Anthem at a Pittsburgh Pirates Game in May 2011.· 5 th graders were selected for the PMEA Singfest <strong>West</strong> at QuakerValley HS in April 2011.· Bon Meade Elementary Singing Tigers performed at the StateCapitol Rotunda for the Music in Our School’s Month ConcertSeries sponsored by PMEA in March 2011.· 6 th graders were selected for the PMEA Singfest <strong>West</strong> at QuakerValley HS in April 2011.· Five 8 th graders were selected for the PMEA Jr. High DistrictChorus at North Hills Jr. High School, in April 2011.· Seven 7 th & 8 th grade girls attended the Sweet Harmony festival atNorth Hills Jr. High School in November 2010.· The 7 th & 8 th Grade Girls Chamber Choir performed at the USSteel Building in December 2010.· The 8 th Grade Concert Choir performed at the Airport in December2010.· The 7 th & 8 th Grade Girls Chamber Choir recorded a CD of allmusic performed throughout the 2010-11 school year.· Four Middle School students participated in Jr. High District Chorusat Burgettstown School District in March 2010.· Students in grades 8-9 represented Moon Middle School at thePMEA Jr. High District Band Festival, held at Hampton HighSchool.· Moon Middle School 7th and 8th Grade band students representedthe district at The <strong>West</strong>ern <strong>Allegheny</strong> County Middle SchoolHonors Band, which was held at Cornell Middle/High School.· Thirteen chorus members auditioned and were selected to 2010PMEA District 1 Honors Choir. Students performed at SetonHill University Performing Arts Center.· Eight chorus members auditioned successfully for 2011 PMEADistrict 1 Chorus, which was held at Chartiers Valley HighSchool.· Six chorus members auditioned and were chosen for the 2011PMEA Region I Chorus, which was held at Pine-RichlandHigh School.· Moon Area High School sent one chorus member to take part in theprestigious 2011 MENC All-Eastern Chorus in Baltimore,Maryland. All-Eastern occurs every two years with eligibility· MAHS Cantari, an auditioned choral ensemble, raised fundsthroughout the 2010-11 year to travel to Walt Disney World inorder to perform for guests at EPCOT in April 2011.· Two students auditioned and were accepted into the PMEA HonorsOrchestra.· Two High School Orchestra students were selected into the PMEADistrict Orchestra held at Fox Chapel High School.· One High School Orchestra student auditioned and qualified for thePMEA Region Orchestra festival held at Bellefonte Area HighSchool.· The High School Marching Band was crowned Class 4AChampions in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic MarchingBand Championships held in October of 2010, receiving an88.38, winning awards for the highest General Effect Scoreand Visual Score in Class 4A.· Six students auditioned and were accepted into the PMEA HonorsBand. These students prepared a collegiate level solo, andperformed their concert at Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh,PA.· Three High School band students were selected into the PMEADistrict Band held at South Park High School.· One High School band student auditioned and qualified for thePMEA Region I Band held at Butler Area High School.· Matthew Diehl, senior trumpet, auditioned and qualified for thePMEA All-State Band. Festival, held in conjunction with thePMEA All-State Music Teachers Convention in Hershey,Pennsylvania.· Eighteen MAHS band students participated in the <strong>West</strong>ern<strong>Allegheny</strong> County Honors Band held at <strong>West</strong> <strong>Allegheny</strong> HighSchool.· The MAHS Winter Color Guard placed 2 nd out of eight groups inthe Three Rivers Winter Education Association Championshipheld at Norwin High School. This was the first year the grouphas participated in the Championship show.· The High School Symphonic Band received a Superior Rating inthe PMEA Music Performance Assessment. A Superior ratingis the highest score achievable in this assessment. The groupreceived straight superior ratings from all three judges. This isthe ensembles fifth straight Superior rating in the last fiveyears.· Music Department Faculty held their 2 nd Annual “So You Want ToBe a Music Major” seminar at the High School in December2010. Professor Stephen Benham from Duquesne Universitywas the guest lecturer.· The Music Department Faculty presented the District Wide Music inOur School’s Month Concert in the new MAHS Auditorium inFebruary 2011. 625 MASD Music students, ranging fromgrades 4-12 performed for a standing room only audience ofover 1,300 people.AL ACHIEVEMENTHIEVEMENTSHIEVEMENTHIEVEMENTHIEVEMENTJanuary 2012 www.alleghenywestmagazine.com 21
