EDITORIALby Adam SapianoWhen I first sat down to write this editorial I was at a loss. So like most would do I went back to some of the firsteditorials written by Brian Barnett OAM. It was funny to read about the issues the VHS faced in 2009, most of whichresemble the conversations that Brian and I have had this year.Brian wrote about the “glory days” with 700 members in total and 300 members attending meetings. UnfortunatelyI was not involved with the VHS during the “glory days” and may not have even been born. Currently the VHS hasapproximately 150 members and on average has 70 members turn up to meetings.I am sure there are a number of reasons why things are so different these days, Facebook, forums and the fact thatmost pet shops can now sell reptiles but I would love to hear from those who were members in “glory days” andnot now (if you still read Odatria). vhs@optusnet.comNow let’s get back on track. Since joining the VHS I have made a number of friends that I would say are now someof my closest. People who share my passion and interests not only reptiles but native wildlife. It is comforting toknow you’re not the weird one in the room who keeps snakes. Meetings are a great place to learn from others whohave done it all before or just to meet new people who might breed that one animal you have been looking for.As I am sure you are all aware the EXPO is just around the corner. For those of you who don’t know, the VHSReptile and Amphibian Expo is held in February each year. The 2014 Expo will be on the 22nd at the Melbourneshow grounds. We are well underway with the new floor plan and sponsors. We will be making a start soon onthose private and commercial tables.Please keep in mind that there are only a small handful of people working on this so if you have or do send an emailplease be patient in waiting for a reply we will get back to you. Email is the best option to contact us and book yourspot. If you could please include your name, contact details, license number and whether you are interested in aprivate or commercial table in the email that would make our job just a little bit easier.We’d like to apologise for the time in between editions of Odatria. Ideally we’d like there to be three issues ayear, but it has been difficult this last year or so to achieve this with family, work and just the number of VHStasks that we work on. You may have noticed the Herp Conference this year - another highly successful venturewe undertook in conjunction with the Healesville Sanctuary. How many of you would like to take part in anothersimilar one next year? - let us know, and we’ll see what we might be able to arrange. Put your hand up to help uswith this and other tasks in an effort to spread the load.On the subject of Odatria, many thanks to all of those that helped us put it together - in particular our newer writers- Marcus Whitby for the feedback/review that he provided for the Healesville Sanctuary Husbandry Conferenceand Elaine Brock for the meeting review and the wonderful Cunningham article. Thanks also to our newer keepersAshleigh Foulds and Graham Jantosh for sharing their experiences. I’m sure many of you out there could contributesomething for us all to share - how about it!Our next meeting is on the 4th of December with John Mostyn from the Australian Reptile Park as our guestspeaker, John’s talk will be about his work in the venom room. It will also be the AGM where a new committee willbe formed.Finding speakers for our meetings can sometimes prove to be difficult, if there is anyone you would like to hearfrom please feel free to let us know.
