PONTOONS & FLOATING STRUCTURES‘From ‘sustainability <strong>to</strong> sustainaquality’<strong>–</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Five</strong> <strong>Lagoons</strong> ProjectNestled in the Indian Ocean between Minicoy Island and the Chagos Archipelago, the Maldives comprise a chain of 26a<strong>to</strong>lls made up of islands and reefs. Tropical weather, white sand and clear water make the islands a popular holidaydestination and a haven for divers but, while the surrounding ocean teems with life, home <strong>to</strong> coral reefs, eels, sharks,turtles, dolphins, manta rays and over 1,100 other species of fish, rising sea levels pose serious threat. Charlotte Niemiecreports on an ambitious community and <strong>to</strong>urism project aimed at keeping the Maldives afloat.<strong>The</strong> average ground level in theMaldives is just 1.5m and the island’spresident, Mohammed Nasheed,has warned that evena ‘small rise’ in sealevels would eradicatelarge parts of the area.Envisioning a future forits people of “climaterefugees living in tents fordecades” the MaldivianGovernment has teamedup with Netherlandsbasedcompany DutchDocklands Internationalin a Joint Venture Project<strong>to</strong> build a solution <strong>to</strong>the problem in the formof man-made floatingislands. <strong>The</strong> ‘5 <strong>Lagoons</strong>Project’ will providehousing, entertainmentand guest complexes forvisi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> the Maldives,expanding its footprintand further bolstering thearea’s <strong>to</strong>urist economy.A star-shaped hoteland conference centre<strong>–</strong> the ‘Green Star’ <strong>–</strong>symbolises the Maldivesroute <strong>to</strong> combat climatechange. Its many fivestarfacilities will includepools, beaches andrestaurants. A ‘plug andplay’ system allows foreach leg of the star <strong>to</strong> beremoved for easy refurbishment anda temporary one floated in and placedin position. It is hoped the centre willplay host <strong>to</strong> international conferenceson sea level rise, climate change andenvironmental issues. It is scheduled <strong>to</strong>open in 2015.Across the water, relaxation is <strong>to</strong>be found at an 18-hole floating golfcourse. With panoramic ocean views,golfers can enjoy the driving range,short games practice areas, puttinggreens and a 9 hole par 3 Academycourse. A separate area on theisland provides romantic homes andConstruction of the Ocean Flower, located in the North Male a<strong>to</strong>ll, isscheduled <strong>to</strong> start soon and will include villas in three different price ranges.<strong>to</strong>wnhouses in Venetian style, in avillage offering boutiques, ice creamparlours, restaurants, bars and ultraluxurypalatial style villas. Movementaround the island <strong>–</strong> assembled inarchipelago form <strong>–</strong> is via bridges orglass tunnels in the ocean, which giveguests the opportunity <strong>to</strong> enjoy thearea’s sea life up close. A marina ofinternational standard will also be buil<strong>to</strong>n this island.Amillarah <strong>–</strong> the Maldivian wordfor private island <strong>–</strong> will consist of 43floating islands offering luxury $10million villas for sale <strong>to</strong> the public.Facilities will include aprivate beach, pool andgreen area, private jettyand small pavilion on apurpose-built island (theshape of which the buyercan design in advance),situated in the centre ofan exclusive, large privatewater plot just a shortswim away from the coralreefs.For those who baulkat the price tag, aseparate development,the ‘Ocean Flower’ offersless expensive housingstarting at $1 million. <strong>The</strong>Ocean Flower is locatedupmarket in the NorthMale a<strong>to</strong>ll, 20 minutes byboat from the capital andairport, and will offer villason three different scales.All have private poolsand terraces and are fullyfurnished, while sharedfacilities include a beach,shops, restaurants,a diving centre, spa,swimming pools and easyaccess <strong>to</strong> the surroundingprivate islands. <strong>The</strong>Ocean Flower willopen mid-2014, withconstruction beginning soon.Finally, the White Lagoon projectconsists of four individual ring-shapedfloating islands each with 72 watervillas connected. <strong>The</strong> rings function asbeach-boulevards with white sand andgreenery.
