Our Saviour Lutheran ChurchSunday, July 28 2013INVITE ... INCLUDE ... INVOLVE‘When night falls a child reaches for the safe hand of a parent.’How much more your Father in heaven gives you his hand as you arePraying in the DarkThere are some times when we are unable to find the words topray. This is when it is good to have some prayers that we have‘learnt by heart’. The Lord’s Prayer is one that most of us know, but what if we were to take a lesson from the Old TestamentJews of learning scripture ‘by heart’.The psalms teach us to reach out to God in our despair. My favourite is Psalm 31—a prayer of faith in troubled times—and I pray it often. Another is a prayer learnt in a 12-stepprogram of recovery—the Prayer of Acceptance, whichI have ‘learnt by heart’. (Kerry Groch)True, strong and loving God,teach me to see things as they really are,to accept myself and to trust fearlessly in your care,to govern myself and to find my peace in doing your will, and, winning or losing,to give myself back to you and to your people.

A Guide to Prayerfor all who seek GodI have a book on prayer given to me by a friend of mine a few months ago. Thebook is entitled “A Guide to Prayer For All Those Who Seek God”. It seems a littleunwieldy but the writers and editors must have decided that no other title would doit justice. As we begin a series on prayer, I must admit that I have misgivings. We often citescripture passages such as ‘ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and you shallfind’ as the guide to prayer. From this passage we conclude that all we need to do iskeep on keeping on, stick at it and persist. To conclude otherwise seems to be achallenge to the very bedrock of our faith. Yet, we all know that prayer is not justasking for things (for example, an Australian top six that can provide a decent scorein the next test match at Old Trafford) but that it should be more than sayingthe same things every day. How do develop a life of prayer that is meaningful, empowering and transformative.Another friend of mine told me this week that last year she prayed for humility andthis year she is praying for wisdom. My experience is that whenever we ask for thisin prayer, God provides it in abundance. Reading from the above mentioned book, the writer suggests that prayer provides us with the answers to the followingnagging questions: ‘How will I know God? How will I know that God is guiding me?How will I know that God has forgiven me?’ The answer to these questions exists ina life of prayer in which we come to God just as we are, with no pretence to beother than we are, better than we are or worse than we are. It is through prayerthat we discover the truth of St Paul’s words in Romans 8:38-39: ‘For I amconvinced that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ ourLord.’Above all, I recall CS Lewis’s conclusion that prayer never changes God but changesus, the one who prays. As a specific fun challenge for you, I suggest that this weeksometime you choose one aspect of your life that is in pain such as a relationship,a situation, and simply present that to God. Explain what you would like to seehappen, articulate your desire for the situation. Then, see if at the end of yourprayer time you do not have a new perspective, a new understanding. In alllikelihood that new understanding will be formed through love, wisdom and humilityattributes of our loving God who we know through Jesus Christ our Lord.Tim Kelly, Group Life & Community Builder
