MUSTO TECHNICALSAILING COLLECTION 2013It’s going to be hard to top 2012 in terms of sport and sailing at its best; the Volvo Ocean Race certainly kept us enthralled as we watchedthe excitement unfold and the leaders get ahead. At Musto, we were privileged to partner the CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealandentry And play our part in getting them onto the podium. We worked with the sailors to improve our kit and kept in close contact to notehow the kit performed. This is how we created our toughest range, the HPX Pro Series – learn about it on page 10.Another proud moment for Musto was watching Team GB’s success in Weymouth; Musto began working with the British Sailing Teamin the Olympic and Paralympic classes in 2008 with a strict brief; to create sportswear that would regulate their body temperatureand allow an immense freedom of movement so the athlete’s performance is not hindered. A close development programme ensuedwith rigorous on the water testing. The 2012 result; 2golds, 3 silvers & 1 bronze!PAGESTAMING THE OCEANSFABRIC TECHNOLOGYHPX060812So, what’s next? The 2012/13 Vendée Globe Race, the‘Everest of sailing’, is a pure test of individual endurancewhere solo sailors set off to become the fastest personto sail non-stop around the globe. This is where reliablekit is essential to the survival of the sailor whether it’stackling extreme conditions in the Roaring Forties orsweltering in the doldrums. T A M I N G T H EOCEANSFormer Vendée Globe winner Vincent Riou knows that the firststep to winning is to finish, and to finish he, and his boat, needto be in tip top condition. Gael Pawson found out more…Vincent Riou isn’t just one of France’s seemingly endlesssupply of talented solo ocean racers, he’s one of the biggestnames in the sport. Forty-year-old Vincent Riou wasvictorious in the 2004/5 Vendée Globe, having previously beentechnical coordinator for Michel Desjoyeaux’s PRB, which wonin 2000/1. It was the closest finish in the history of the race asRiou crossed the line less than seven hours ahead of secondplacedJean Le Cam.In 2008 he returned to defend his title, but it wasn’t to be. Justoff Cape Horn he went to the rescue of his arch-rival in theprevious race, Jean Le Cam, who had lost the bulb off his keeland capsized. Just a few hours later, disaster struck and hisboat was dismasted – the dismasting was believed to be dueto clipping one of the boat’s outriggers on Le Cam’s upturnedkeel. Riou was given redress and awarded joint third place inthe race, but it wasn’t quite the result he had planned.Undeterred, he soon had a new boat. The fifth PRB was thefirst of the new generation IMOCA 60s to be launched afterthe 2008-9 Vendée Globe. Vincent and his new boat were soonbusy putting an impressive number of miles under their beltsahead of the next Vendée, with some good results, including awin in the Europa Warm Up and third in the 2011 BtoB Transat.

So as the only former winner on the start line of the2012-13 race, we wondered what it feels like to finishfirst in this amazing race? ‘It’s fantastic!’ says Vincent.‘It is a great moment in a sailor’s life. It is reallyunique.’Preparing the boatHow does Vincent prepare for a race like the Vendée?‘I try to have the biggest technical preparation Ican. I’m meticulous and I like to work on technicalimprovements. My way of thinking is: if the boat isn’tready, it is hard to be efficient.’Vincent’s was the first new boat to be launched, prettymuch straight after the 2008-9 race. ‘I’ve sailed a lot withthe boat.’ He laughs: ‘I think she has sailed once aroundthe world already! And I’ve trained a lot in solo. PRB is atthe height of her power,’ he adds, which bodes well forhis chances of success in the 2012-13 race.Preparing the manIt isn’t just his boat that’s important, Vincent’s wellbeingis also paramount: ‘For me a sailor’s equipmentis critical to his success. It is impossible to be efficientif you don’t have the right clothes at the right time.During the Vendée Globe, we will meet with differentclimates so I need lots of clothes, from t-shirts to adrysuit!’Vincent views his sailing kit as a knight heading intobattle would see his armour: ‘Your clothes are yourprotection in this unfriendly environment. Musto is thebest for that. I’ve chosen the best improvements.’of the sailors that take on its immense challenge and, win or lose, theycome back again and again. ‘All my preparation, all my training has beenorganised to reach my goal: the Vendée Globe,’ explains Vincent. What draws him back to the race? The answer is both the competition, andthe race’s unique ability to deliver some amazing experiences: ‘The startand the arrival is incredible. The Cape Horn and the arrival in the SouthernSeas are also different. There is something special in these moments.’Most of us can only experience these amazing moments through sailorslike Vincent Riou and with today’s technology, these solo sailors are ableto share film footage, photos and stories with their followers. But we canexperience many of the technological advances and developments that havecome about as a result of the boundaries he and his fellow sailors continueto push. The results can be seen in the boats we all sail, and the clothingwe all wear as the lessons learned in the most extreme environments andchallenging of conditions help to develop better and better protection forthose who battle with the elements. Thanks to sailors like Vincent Riou, not only do we get to share someamazing experiences, we are also warmer and drier than ever before. It isn’t just the boat designs that have seen hugetechnological leaps over the years. New materials andtechnologies have seen improvements year on yearand today’s sailing clothing is very different from theclothing of 30, 20, or even 10 years ago. When Vincentstarted sailing things were very different: ‘The suitsweren’t breathable…. we were dripping… we were wetand we didn’t know the reason, was it sea water orperspiration?’Today, the equipment allows sailors to sail at their bestin all conditions.‘The fact that the suits are now breathable andwaterproof, and the latex cuffs keep out the water, means we are always dry. The most important thing isto be warm and dry,’ says Vincent.Winning ingredientsSo, apart from a great boat and top-level clothing, what does it take to win the Vendée Globe Race? ‘Youneed to be brilliant in different fields. The winner isnot the one who is the best in only one field. Our sportneeds lots of qualities, you really need to be skilful.’It seems that when it come to winning the VendéeGlobe, once isn’t enough. This race gets into the blood7

WINDSTOPPER ®The WINDSTOPPER ® membrane is an ultra thin protective layer whichis laminated to a lightweight textile layer, making it totally windproof. It is made of the versatile polymer PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) whichis expanded to create a microporous structure. These micropores are900 times larger than water vapor molecules, allowing perspirationto pass through unhindered. This means that the WINDSTOPPER ®membrane adds total windproofness to any textile without perceivablyrestricting its initial breathability or weight.OUTDRY ®An innovative technology to waterproof garments where the standardmanufacturing techniques based on seam-sealed waterproof fabricscannot be utilised. The OutDry® patented lamination process is such thatthe waterproof/breathable membrane is directly bonded to the externallayer of the garment, perfectly sealing any possible water entry point.ARCTEC FLEECEArctec high loft fleece is a breakthrough in durable, personalinsulation - trusted by our test team to preserve core bodytemperature and maintain optimum working muscle temperature, even in bitter Southern Ocean conditions.Arctec fleece is soft, lightweight, warm and comfortable. Tinyair pockets in the super high loft fabric structure retain body heatwhilst the lightweight breathable properties ensure rapid moisturetransfer - keeping you dry, comfortable and warm with minimumbulk. It is hydrophobic, holding less than 1% of it’s weight in water,it retains much of its insulating powers - even when wet - and highlybreathable, allowing perspiration to readily pass through the fabric. These qualities make it ideal for making clothing intended to be usedduring extreme physical activity.D3O ® IMPACT PROTECTIOND3O ® containing intelligent molecules is flexible andmoves with the wearer yet locks together on impactabsorbingenergy & providing superior protection.D3O ® outperforms conventional soft foams of the samethickness on impact by up to six times.SCHOELLER ®Hard wearing fabric using Kevlar ® , an aramide fibrewhich is, gram for gram, five times stronger than steel.CORDURA ®CORDURA ® fabric provides rugged durableperformance for a variety of end uses, includingluggage, footwear and performance apparel. silverstarsLuke Patience and Stuart Bithell weretwo of the shining lights from the 2012Olympic Games…No one can have enjoyed the 2012 Olympic Sailing Regattamore than 470 silver-medallists Luke Patience and StuartBithell… if there were medals to award for the best winningcelebrations, then theirs would surely have taken gold. From the first day of racing they were bubbling withenthusiasm, enjoying every second. Luke’s reaction to the firstday was infectious: ‘Loved it! It was champagne yachting; itwas windy it was wet and it was fast and we love that!’Both Luke, who has the diminutive frame of a typical 470helmsman, but with enough personality to fill a football pitch, and Stuart, the giant crew, who towers above his teammate, seemed to be wearing massive grins all week!©Skandia Team GBRThey might know how to have fun but this team is deadlyserious about its racing. They showed they had the measureof Weymouth, pushing the older, experienced Australian duo,who were clear favourites for gold, all the way, and very nearlyupsetting the form book.‘Weymouth’s a tricky venue,’ explains Luke. ‘Sometimes youfind your rhythm and it clunks and it clicks and it feels easy, but someone in the same race who’s not in their rhythm wouldsay: “Wow that was a really difficult course today.” There’sno secrets and there’s no magic, it’s just about finding yourrhythm, getting in a good place and letting that tick over forthe hour-long race.’ They certainly ticked throughout theevent, guaranteeing silver, and then pushing hard for gold inthe medal race. The fact that they couldn’t beat the Australiansdidn’t dampen their joy. They had sailed brilliantly, and takenOlympic silver at their first Games. They were winners.Stuart explains their approach: ‘We worked really, really hardup until the Olympics. At the opening ceremony we thought:“Right we’ve done all we can do, let’s go and have fun… we’renot gonna to do any better or worse by not having fun!” So wetook that approach and it was an absolute hoot all the way.’He adds: ‘Myself and Luke are both very cheery characters andwe get along really, really well - and it’s such a huge opportunitythe Olympics, that you’d be mad not to enjoy the experienceand have some fun. Don’t get me wrong, when we’re racingand we’re doing boatwork we’re serious, but we’re having funon the way.’Not only were they were on good form, but they were alsoconfident in their preparation. ‘The main thing for me, and forLuke, was quietening the demons in his head… Knowing that©Skandia Team GBRwe’d done all the training and we were as best prepared as we could be,’ says Stuart.‘We spend a lot of time getting sorted getting the boat ready for the Olympics. In 2010we lost the world championship due to gear failure, so we were pretty adamant thatwasn’t going to happen. The boat was in pristine condition.’ They also knew the venueinside out.It might have been their first Olympics, but they didn’t let it overwhelm them: ‘Wethought it would be more nerve-wracking and it would feel different, but the only realdifference is the sail says GBR all over it and there’s a massive clock on the committeeboat counting down…’ says Luke. ‘Racing 470s round a course for an hour putting ourhearts and souls into it… that feels normal.’Sailing-addictedYou might think Luke and Stuart would be ready for a holiday after the intensity ofthe Olympic regatta. Not Stuart, he was straight off to the Merlin Rocket National

Championship, which he won, this time sitting at the back of the boat.‘I absolutely love sailing and I love helming boats. As I’ve been crewingmostly in the 470 it was nice for me to do an event with a stick in my hand, which was really good fun.’It’s a common theme, even the top professional sailors often can’t keepaway from the water, why is that? ‘It’s a great sport, it’s forever changing,it’s always very different so it’s actually hard to get bored of it! If you getbored of Weymouth then go to Palma!’ says Stuart. That doesn’t mean there aren’t tough times: ‘It is sometimes tiring inthe winter and you’ve got to get your wet wetsuit on for the sixth day in arow,’ Stuart acknowledges… which of course is when the right kit is key.‘Skandia Team GBR is very fortunate to be sponsored by Musto and thetechnology and the equipment that as elite sailors we need to be trainingin the winter. Certainly for me training in winter, a drysuit keeps me dryand warm – it makes it a little bit more bearable.’The kit changes when they are at an event: ‘I try to keep off the drysuitsin racing purely because of the aerodynamics and flexibility. I’ll generallywear a wetsuit and spray top, or if it’s a bit colder, a MPX dry smock – thebreathable one, which keeps the top half of your body dry. For me that’san absolute lifesaver stood out on that wire, standing in the wind doingnothing!‘Luke’s slightly different, he’s generally working a lot harder. Thereare some conditions in the 470 where I’ll stand on the wire and not domuch really, so I’m a sitting duck for getting cold! But Luke’s a lot moremanoeuvrable and he’s always working the boat, so he’s wearing lessthan me - potentially just a wetsuit and maybe a technical rash vestunder that, but not really a drytop, unless it’s really cold!’ In his homewaters of Scotland maybe! The futureJust as Musto’s story started with an Olympic silver medal, so it seemsthat Luke and Stuart are headed for more great things. They had barelyreached the shore before announcing their desire to compete in the2016 Rio Olympic Games. ‘We’ll maybe have a slightly more relaxed sixmonths and build up from there onwards,’ says Stuart. Whatever they do,they are sure to be having fun. Gael Pawson©Skandia Team GBRThe medalists join Musto for the launch of the AW12 lifestyle collection25

DefendersChallengersThe America’s Cup is sailing’s most coveted trophy. Surroundedby an aura of prestige, magic and glamour, it has inspired therich, the famous and the very top sailors throughout its 160-year history. Fortunes have been lost trying to win it, legendsmade losing it. Heroes and villains, secrecy and intrigue and thecutting edge of technology are the ingredients that have given ita status that is second to none.Where it all startedWhen the yacht America won a race around the Isle of Wight in1851 it was the start of the oldest international sporting trophy inthe world – predating even the modern Olympics and the Ashes.‘There is no second,’ Queen Victoria was told as her aides strainedto see which boat followed the yacht ‘America’ as she crossed thefinish. The ‘100 Guinea Cup’, as it was then known, which hadbeen put up by Britain’s Royal Yacht Squadron, travelled backto America with its winner, and there it was set to stay for over100 years. The trophy was donated to the New York Yacht Clubas ‘a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition betweennations’… and so the America’s Cup was born. The forefront of technologyThe America’s Cup is perhaps the most difficult sporting trophyto win. In the more than 160 years since that first race, onlythree other nations have won it – Australia, New Zealand andSwitzerland. It truly is a Holy Grail.Since its origins lie in a match designed for Britain to showoff its superior yacht technology, the boats have pushed thetechnological boundaries of their day. Budgets are huge, and noexpense is spared to harness the fastest designs and the bestcrew. The America’s Cup is a demanding and expensive challenge, breaking new ground in yacht design, materials and construction. But it’s not just the boats themselves that are at the forefront oftechnology; the same applies to every element of each challenge, from weather to nutrition and clothing.

Modern historyAustralia was the first nation to take the trophy away from Americanwaters, when Australia II, featuring a revolutionary keel design, won in 1983. America won the Cup straight back in 1987, but then in1995, New Zealand won and became the first non-American teamto successfully defend the Cup in Auckland in 2000.In 2003, Switzerland’s Alinghi challenged and won, so the Cupfinally returned to Europe. The Swiss, lacking suitable waters oftheir own, took the competition to Valencia in Spain, where theyagain won. Then a host of legal challenges kept the competition inthe law courts and until the judges ordered a ‘Deed of Gift’ race, which was run in Valencia in 2010 between just one Challenger andthe Defender. That’s when BMW Oracle won – returning the Cup toAmerica once again… this time San Francisco. The formatThe format for each edition of the America’s Cup (San Francisco2013 will be the 34th) is agreed between the Cup holder, and theChallengers. In recent times (apart from the 2010 match) the Cupformat has involved a Challenger Series – the Louis Vuitton Cup– where all the teams hoping to win the Cup from its holder racesail one another, first in one-on-one ‘round-robin’ matches todecide a seeding, then a knock-out series. The cards are stacked infavour of the Cup holder, known as the Defender, as it simply goesstraight into the final, where they face the winner of the ChallengerSeries. For the 2013 America’s Cup the Defender will be OracleTeam USA, with four Challengers: Artemis Racing (Sweden), TeamKorea (Korea), Luna Rossa (Italy) and Emirates Team New Zealand. The America’s Cup World SeriesAs a warm up to the 2013 America’s Cup proper, a series in smallerboats with additional, lower-funded teams, has been running - withthe final events early in 2013. Competing on this circuit are all theChallengers, the Defender, as well as Ben Ainslie Racing (GreatBritain), Energy Team (France) and China Team. The World Series is run on small courses close to shore in 45ftmultihulls. The boats are identical and the racing is fast, furiousfull of drama. Capsizing is all part of the game. For the sailors, their kit needs to be light, flexible and yet warm. These are physicalboats, and the athleticism they demand has led to the developmentof lighter and more flexible garments. The America’s CupFor the 2013 Challenger Series and America’s Cup proper, theteams step up to larger craft; 72-foot catamarans with solid ‘wingsails’ that tower some 130 feet off the water. It is the first timea fleet of multihulls, designed to the same rule has raced in theevent. The windy and waves of San Francisco Bay promise to addplenty of drama, on a much larger scale than with the smaller 45’s.The boats will be fast, very fast, and many if not all seem to featurehydrofoils. These are special foils that enable the boats to lift upand skim along, with their hulls above the water. The New Zealandboat has already been spotted ‘flying’, and the American’s first boatshowed foils on the daggerboard and rudder during its maiden sail. With the boats approaching 40 knots, the chase boats will struggleto keep up. This is the fastest, the most technologically advancedracing in the world.
