Yourstudents may research cucumbers as an accompanying lesson to this book. Pest such as cucumber beetles that attack cucumbers are also abeneficial topic to research. Have students locate the reason that larger cucumbers do not makegood pickles; why are small cucumbers the best for pickling?• As an extension, students may research agricultural products that are grown in our area andanalyze ways this product could be used as a money-making crop as occurred in the book.• Chemical reactions, salt, the pickling process as a chemical reaction are examples of strongtopics that students could study as an extension of this book. Students may plantseveral different varieties of cucumber and compare the leaves, flowers, vines, and otheraspects of cucumber plants.Social Studies:• This book would be great when studying economics – from the very basic concepts of prices,earning money, and making purchases, to higher-level economic issues such as cost of livingand inflation. The value of a dollar in 1900 and the value of a dollar in 2007 would be an eyeopeninglesson for students.• For elementary and intermediate students, a mini-lesson on map skills could become ateachable moment with this book. Lightning Link PlansLightning LinkAs long as the trigger is held back, the sear is held below the arc of the hammer notch. The only thing holdingthe hammer in the cocked position is the disconnector.The Lightning Link accomplishes full-auto fire by pullnig the disconnector to the rear forcing it to release thehammer.The assembled link lays flat in the lower reciever, with the opening at the front fitting over the hook of thedisconnector, and the upright resting between the upper reciever take-down pinpost, and the bolt carrier.In operation the take-down pin post acts as a fulcrum point. When the bolt carrier strikes the top of the linksupright the lower end is rocked to the rear, moving the body of th elink backward about 1/16 inch, releasing thehammer from under the disconnector hook. As long as the trigger is held back the rearward movement of thebolt carrier will cock the hammer under the disconnector hook. The forward movement of the carrier willstrikethe upright of the link just as the bolt locks in battery, releasing the hammer, and firing the weapon.
