It is thought to be aNazgûl.1240 The southern lands of Gondor become separated from the royal succession of Gondor, and are governedby Calimehtar, the Capta<strong>in</strong> of the Ships.1248 K<strong>in</strong>g M<strong>in</strong>alcar of Gondor aids Vidugavia of Rhovanion <strong>in</strong> driv<strong>in</strong>g the Easterl<strong>in</strong>gs from their lands. Analliance is formed between Gondor and Rhovanion.1264 Valacar son of M<strong>in</strong>alcar weds Vidumavi daughter of Vidugavia, further cement<strong>in</strong>g alliance betweenGondor and Rhovanion. Many southern Gondor nobles are uneasy.1274 Castamir is born to Calmir, the son of Calimehtar, and Eldacar is born to K<strong>in</strong>g Valacar.c.1300 Evil beg<strong>in</strong>s to encroach on the lands. Orcs appear <strong>in</strong> the Misty Mounta<strong>in</strong>s, the Nazgûl are seen abroad,and the Witch-k<strong>in</strong>g takes Angmar for his own.1384 Castamir becomes Capta<strong>in</strong> of the Ships.1409 The Witch-k<strong>in</strong>g of Angmar <strong>in</strong>vades the three K<strong>in</strong>gdoms of Arnor. Rhudaur and Cardolan areoverwhelmed, and only Artheda<strong>in</strong> succeeds <strong>in</strong> turn<strong>in</strong>g the Black Tide.1432 – 47 The K<strong>in</strong>-strife <strong>in</strong> Gondor. Led by Castamir of Pelargir, the Sea-lords of the South seize control of thek<strong>in</strong>gdom. K<strong>in</strong>g Eldacar flees to Rhovanion.1447 After a ten year exile, Eldacar returns to reclaim the throne of Gondor. His army of Northmen andGondorian loyalists vanquish Castamir's rebellious forces at the Cross<strong>in</strong>gs of Erui. The Rebels flee by seaand seize Umbar, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g the rule of the Corsairs.1635 – 37 The Great Plague, a series of devastat<strong>in</strong>g diseases and pestilences, sweep through Rhovanion, Gondor,and Eriador. Calenardhon is gradually abandoned after this time. The Tower of Orthanc (“Isengard” or“Angrenost”) rema<strong>in</strong>s guarded, but its use becomes less frequent.1640 The capital of Gondor is moved from Osgiliath on the Andu<strong>in</strong> to nearby M<strong>in</strong>as Anor. Osgiliath, alreadydepopulated by the Plague, cont<strong>in</strong>ues to decl<strong>in</strong>e.The watch on Mordor ceases.1810 Gondor drives the Corsairs from Umbar.1856 – 99 An Easterl<strong>in</strong>g confederation, the Wa<strong>in</strong>riders, enters Rhovanion and drives the armies of Gondor westwardacross the Andu<strong>in</strong>. Gondor abandons its eastern hold<strong>in</strong>gs.1974 The armies of the Witch-k<strong>in</strong>g overrun Artheda<strong>in</strong>1975 Arvedui, the last K<strong>in</strong>g of Artheda<strong>in</strong> drowns <strong>in</strong> the Ice Bay. Two of the Palantíri those of Annúm<strong>in</strong>as andAmon Sûl) are lost when his ship s<strong>in</strong>ks. An army composed of troops from Gondor and the Eriadoranallies defeats the Witch-k<strong>in</strong>g. Angmar falls.1900 – 77 The Éothraim migrate northward, eventually settl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the upper Andu<strong>in</strong> Valley, becom<strong>in</strong>g the Éothéod.1980 The Witch-k<strong>in</strong>g re-enters Mordor and gathers his fellow R<strong>in</strong>gwraiths.The Balrog of Moria comes forth and kills Dur<strong>in</strong> VI.1981 The Dwarves abandon Khazâd-dûm.1999 Refugees from Khazâd-dûm found a settlement <strong>in</strong> Erebor (the Lonely Mounta<strong>in</strong>).2000 The Nazgûl besiege the Gondorian mounta<strong>in</strong> city of M<strong>in</strong>as Ithil.c. 2000 – 2200 Dwarves of Dur<strong>in</strong>'s K<strong>in</strong>dred beg<strong>in</strong> settl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the southern part of the Grey Mounta<strong>in</strong>s. They avoid contactwith the Dragons breed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Withered Heath.2002 The Nazgûl take M<strong>in</strong>as Ithil and secure its Palantír (the Ithil-stone). The place is renamed M<strong>in</strong>as Morgul.M<strong>in</strong>as Anor is renamed M<strong>in</strong>as Tirith (‘Tower of Guard’).Page 10
