Stockley Academy’s National Science andEngineering Week went off with a bang!NSEW was kick started thisyear by a visit from PeteBarrett from HART Rockets.Pete brought along numerous rocketswhich he had previously launchedas well as showing Year 8 students aDVD of the numerous rockets he haslaunched with his group HornchurchAirfield Rocket Team. He also showedsome video of rocket launches that didnot go as smoothly!Pete explained the design of therockets, the materials that are usedand why, as well as how they makesure they can collect and reuse therockets using in-built parachutes. Healso spoke about the gunpowderengines that different sized rocketsused and how far different enginescan propel rockets.Students were able to design and buildtheir very own rockets with in-builtparachutes. The students showedexcellent practical skills during themorning ‘build’ phase. After lunch thestudents went to the back field andlaunched the rockets which flew up to150 ft into the air! The students thenwaited for the rockets to fall back to theearth using their parachutes.Mr Martin, Acting 2 i/c ScienceStarchaser Rockets wasanother visitor to theAcademy during NationalScience and Engineeringweek.They made a big first impression; whenstudents arrived at the Academy inthe morning they were awestruck andamazed to see a rocket parked in themiddle of their playground!Pupils watched a presentationby the Founder and CEO ofStarchaser, Steve Bennett.Steve showed real footage ofrockets taking off and landingback on Earth. Steve alsoshowed how important the righttype of fuel and propulsion is forthe rocket to take off into space.Three demonstrations took place;hydrogen gas making a largebottle fly across the assembly hall;kerosene fuel burning didn’t do muchalone, but add oxygen by spinning it,the fire rises into a vortex of flame; lastlySteve showed us how to make a fueland propellant with hydrogen peroxide(what you use to dye your hair) andpotassium iodide. This made a foam likestructure which just kept getting largerand larger!Ms Mahfouz, Teacher of Science
LRC NEWS UPDATEStudents visit The London School of EconomicsStudents compete valiantly in 2013Deutsche Bank Debate Mate CupIn April, six Stockley Academy students were fortunate to visit the hallowedhalls of one of London’s most prestigious universities, The London School ofEconomics, to participate in the 2013 Deutsche Bank Debate Mate CupNEW listeningbooksLast term Student Librarian, WasimAli (Year 11) won the Jack Petcheyaward. He donated part of his prize tothe LRC and we bought audio booksfor the listening centre. Students cannow enjoy reading and develop furtherreading skills by listening to interestingsound effects, music and multiplenarrators. The listening centre can beset-up for Sixth Form Students and amember of staff to read so they canlisten to a book together. The listeningcentre provides a wonderful opportunityfor students to listen to their favouritestories being read aloud and creates apositive reading experience.‘The Hunting Ground’ by CliffMcNish was the winner of theHillingdon Secondary SchoolBook of the Year 2013.A group of Year 8 students; EmmaEggleton, Laura Taylor Barnes,Rebecca Dowling, Paige Steele andLily-May McLoughlin participated inthe HSSBY Award. They read up to sixshort listed novels, wrote book reviews,created a display of the winning bookand produced a short presentationcalled, ‘The Apprentice Stockley Style’for students and staff to watch. Aftermany monthsof reading weended with awell-deserved‘Pizza Party!’ tocelebrate all thehard work andcommitment ofour students.Mrs Bhatti,LRC ManagerThe students took part in three debatesthroughout the day, discussing a rangeof issues from nuclear weapons to therole of women in sport. Although theywere accompanied by Miss Black and MrGrossobel, the students were left to theirown devices for all the competitions andall their successes were down to theirhard work, preparation and commitment.The two older members of the team,Rebecca Walker and Robson Lawrence,were immensely valuable and werea huge help for the less experienceddebaters.A great startThe students started the day fantastically,winning the first debate on nuclearweapons by some margin. Followingthis, Rebecca managed to etch her nameinto this year’s hall of fame, winning ‘BestTweet’ with a particularly witty remarkabout our win, “Those other teamsbest be stock-piling nuclear deterrents,because Stockley’s gone nuclear!” Thefollowing two debates were also hotlycontested, with the team narrowlymissing out in both. Yasmeen Mudey,Nicole New, Chantel Owen and HollyWalker showed incredible confidencefor Debate Mate Cup first timers and willcertainly be ones to watch for the future!Knock out question from RobsonThe students also got the opportunity towatch a show debate on the pros andcons of reality TV, with Debate Mateteachers and mentors battling it out onstage. Our very own Robson Lawrencemanaged to steal the show with a knockoutquestion; something he confessedhad been an ambition since he joined theDebate Mate Team in Year 7!The day was extremely enjoyable for all,with the Team performing outstandingly inall the debates they participated in. Theywere a credit to the Academy!Well done to Robson Lawrence, YasmeenMudey, Nicole New, Chantel Owen, HollyWalker and Rebecca Walker for theirfantastic contribution to Debate Matethroughout this Academic Year.
