OZARKS’ TREASURYTHE GREAT THAYER MISSOURI REVIVALby Brenda Brim KrukowI have held this article for almost three years, waiting for the perfect time to print it. However, Iknew the season was now with the summer weddings, and then the cherry-on-top, Mom just finishingthe Revelation School that tells of the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. BrendaSeptember 2010: After learningabout an intriguing tombstonein Thayer, Missouri howcould two newlyweds (marriedJune 2010) resist such anadventure on a perfect fallday? So Tony and I headedtwo hours east to the ThayerMissouri Cemetery. Sureenough we found it with thehelp of two widowedladies—Charlene and Judy. Not to my surprise, Tony hitit-offwith them and found outthat Judy went to brush arbormeetings in the area as a child.Behind this tombstone isnothing less than the HolySpirit's power that all beganfrom a famous revival inThayer, Missouri, in 1909. It isdescribed in the book, TheSparkling Fountain by Fred T.Corum, and Hazel E.Bakewell. The authors' motherwas Lilly Harper Corum, thefirst documented Spirit-filledaccount in Springfield, Missouriin 1907. (The authors' AuntRachel went to Azusa and cameback and set the Ozarks on HolyGhost fire.) Their mother's sister,Florence, was married to CharlieTaliaferro. It was "Uncle Charlie"and "Aunt Florence's" tombstonethat Tony and I went to see. It isrelevant to the Marriage Supperof the Lamb and John Davis, who shook Yellville, Arkansas,(about 50 miles southeast ofPrayer Mountain) with HolyGhost Power.John Davis, Ozark Pentecostal Preacher. He would go out in the woods and pray allnight before he would preach.Photo from The Sparkling FountainJohn Davis(from The Sparkling Fountain)One of the most remarkableconverts 1 to come out of the greatThayer, Missouri, tentmeetingwas a fiddler and dance-callerfrom Arkansas. He had been adrunkard and the craving was sogreat, that he had to sleep with ajug of whisky beside him atnight. He heard the commotionand came to Mother Barnes’ tentmeetingto see the show. He wasgloriously and thoroughly savedand filled with the HolyGhost. Back in those dayswhen you got the Holy Ghost,it put the "go" in your feet andJohn Davis became a preacher. He just started preaching andrelied on the Holy Spirit toshow him what to say. UncleCharlie loved him, as didmany others, and he wouldtravel many miles just to hearJohn Davis preach. Joe Dukerecognized the stamp of Godupon Brother Davis' ministryand bought him a tent to holdmeetings in. John Davis heldtentmeetings all overArkansas.Once when Uncle Charliewas very sick, he sent for JohnDavis, and he came andprayed. Uncle Charlie was gloriouslyhealed and never forgotthe great faith of this preciousevangelist.John Davis was holding abrush arbor meeting down inYellville, Arkansas, and thepower of God began to fall. Bythe way, a brush arbor was madeby stringing wires back and forthbetween tree limbs. Then leaffilledbranches would be placed1 See article on page 5.(Continued on page 4)3
