SignageSigns serve dual roles to communicate the name of your business and add visualinterest for pedestrians. With signs, the store owner can advertise, identify, andpromote the business image. Signs should be simple utilizing the name and logo ofthe business. Light letters on a dark background provide the easiest reading (seeimage for example). Clean, fresh and classic typefaces and logos go a long way toprojecting an impression of a successful, prosperous commercial district.A secondary sign may be used to add to the messaging. Examples include hanging, window, awning, or a sign that is located below a primary sign. If a projected sign, such as a blade sign, is proposed, placement is critical to avoid obscuring adjacentsigns. Signs should not obscure significant features of the building, but ratherpromote the details of the building which are incremental to suggest a motif for newsigns. Signs should also respect neighboring buildings, and not overpower adjacentstructures. In deciding the number of signs, keep in mind that too many signs with toomuch information result in visual clutter.Accordingly, the size of the sign matters and big does not necessarily mean impactful.Smaller, lower signs that are visible to pedestrians are more effective at announcingbusiness’ presence to passersby. Pedestrian scaled signs can combine with theentire storefront to become more meaningful than just the sign itself (see image). Ascommercial corridors revolve from auto-centric to pedestrian-focused, signs should be developed to attract pedestrians.Because of the vast array of options for letters and font types, it is required that a design company be consulted. Bayview Hunters Point Center forArts and Technology (BAYCAT) and designated architects from SF Shines provide design services such as branding and logo design that may beapplied to all areas of the business including façade, packaging, menu boards, business cards and brochures, as well as branding on a website.Note, the specific number and size of signs allowed is regulated by the Planning Code Article 6.City and County of San Francisco 2
Security GrillesOpaque, solid roll-down security gates and scissor gates make the commercial corridor feel unsafe and do not allow shoppers to see themerchandise. The purpose of security grilles is to provide overnight building security, and should not be visible during the day. Interior mountedopen-mesh security grilles are preferred to maintain storefront transparency at night so window shoppers see the merchandise. Stores that havesecurity gates and/or grilles installed are eligible for grants to replace or remove exterior gates and installation of new interior security grilles, cameras, and/or alarm systems. If security grilles are requested, a roll-down security grille is preferred and may be mounted on the interior of the storefront so that the grille rollsdown on the inside of the display window and door. Alternatively, an external security grille may be mounted if the grille base is installed on theinterior of the storefront, or the outer face of the grille base is recessed so as not to protrude beyond the building street wall. In some cases, rolled upcoils of the base can be hidden behind projecting awnings or within soffits.Explore various types of transparent security grilles to find the one that best fits the look of the shop and compliments the building façade.BEFOREAFTER (security grilles are installed behind the windows)City and County of San Francisco 3
