efore the student applies for graduation with the approval of the advisor,graduate coordinator <strong>and</strong>/or department chair. A student’s Plan of Study must beapproved by his/her advisor <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Graduate</strong> Program Director. Responsibilityfor meeting all academic requirements for a selected program rests with thestudent.4. Selection of Ph.D. Committee: Once an Advisor is selected, the student mustconfer with him/her for assistance in the formation of a Dissertation Committee.Once established, the committee as a whole is responsible for recommending anychanges in its composition. The committee consists of an Advisor <strong>and</strong> threeadditional faculty members with research interests related to the field of study ofthe student. A student may choose no more than one member from a departmentor organization outside the <strong>ISE</strong> Department.5. Complete Qualifying Exam: Register for the INEN991 course, take the QualifyingExam <strong>and</strong> pass the exam. See Appendix F for details about the exam.6. Complete Preliminary Exam: Register for the INEN995 course, take <strong>and</strong> pass thePreliminary Exam. See Appendix G for details about the exam.7. Complete Course Work <strong>and</strong> Other requirements: The student is required tocomplete the course work as listed in his/her approved Plan of Study.8. Complete Oral Proposal Defense: See section 7.6 for details about the exam.9. Complete <strong>and</strong> Defend Dissertation Research: The dissertation final defensebefore the advisory committee must be successfully completed, <strong>and</strong> a report mustbe prepared to the satisfaction of the committee. The time between proposaldefense <strong>and</strong> final defense should be no less than 180 days.9. Publication: All Ph.D. students are strongly encouraged to publish at least threetechnical papers at peer reviewed conference proceedings. It is recommended tohave at least one technical paper each year from the second year of his/herdoctoral studies. In addition, a Ph.D. student must submit at least one technical paper from his/her dissertation research for publication(s) to peerreviewedjournal(s) before scheduling the final defense.10. Graduation: Students must apply for graduation in accordance with the deadlinesestablished by the School of <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies.7.6 Dissertation Research RequirementsThe steps in completing dissertation requirements are given below:1. With the consent <strong>and</strong> advice of his/her advisor, the student selects a tentativeresearch topic. See Appendix D for detailed guidelines for selection of adissertation topic.13
